Reversing sensor when towing

Featured Replies

Hi All,

anyone know how to disabled the reversing sensors on my 2006 Octavia estate when towing - it just sounds off permanently when reverse is selected, as it is sensing the trailer.

Thanks in anticipation.

What sort of towbar is it? If it is properly set up, has a controller and the car has been correctly coded then it shouldn't do that.

If its a car specific electrics set and has been properly coded, then it should deactivate the rear sensors when a connector is plugged in.

If its been tapped into the electrics in the boot then it won't be CANBUS compatible and the car won't know that there is anything connected.

Mine does this too. I'm not sure what isn't set up right. The sensors look original (I think they're standard fit on a 4x4), but no display on the Stream. The towbar electrics do an automatic light check cycle when plugged in, without the normal rear lights flashing away, so it looks properly coded. And of course when in reverse the sensors scream that I am about to crash into my cycle carrier. Can anyone tell me which bit is wrong and needs looking at?

Have you had it scanned to check the coding, see which modules are installed and see if there are any error codes stored?

VCDS can be very useful...

No, I haven't yet, I knew it would come to the stock briskoda answer :). I need to get that done as I also want some options turned on.

My 56 plate 4x4 doesn't have parking sensors. If it doesn't display on the stream of hen I would suspect they are after market ones. The eBay ones I fitted to our Leon look pretty OEM.

Hmm, I bought it from a dealer and I was told they were genuine. We discussed it because they didn't work on the test drive, but were sorted when I collected the car. Possible there is still an outstanding issue with them then?

If they are OEM then it would suggest a fault or something isn't coded correctly.

Mind you both salesmen at my local dealer swore blind my car was a 1.9 when it was obviously a 2 litre.

Thanks, I'll get it scanned and see whats what.

It sounds like you've got a bypass relay fitted, to confirm this bypass relays beep with the indicators. If so you won't be able to get the sensor cut-off function without rewiring the towbar with a vehicle specific wiring kit

Yes, it beeps with the indicators, from the back, when something is connected to the electrics.

Definitely a bypass relay then. Is there a switch to manually deactivate the sensors?

I've not found one and I don't have any unknown switches. Thanks for that, at least I know why it doesn't work.

I can't recall exactly whose make the towbar is - it was fitted at a specialist, but not Skoda. The reversing sensor is factory fitted OEM & the repeater bleeper works when the trailer is plugged into the 12N socket & the indicators activated. It also bleeps when un/locking the car. Sounds like I need a trip to my local dealer (Farmers) to get something altered/reset?

I can't be too far from you and I would be happy to scan the car with VCDS for you.

Just looked around the cabin and following the noise, yep, they're aftermarket sensors. But I did find the volume control on the speaker. How long have I had this car? Haha.

Not long enough, obviously...

Hi Trundlenut, thanks for the offer to scan with VCDS, but pardon my thickness, but what is it & what does it do? I assume it is some way of reprogramming how the car behave in certain aspects?

VCDS basically works like the diagnostics machines that dealers have. You can for faults and reprogramme controllers. So if you fit a new towbar with a proper controller it will need to be coded to work with car correctly, VCDS can do this.

Hi again, thanks for the explanation re: the VCDS. I would be happy to meet up & see if this could be resolved. I can be contacted on 07956280713.

Thanks.

Wiggers. Probably best to edit your post to remove your mobile number and PM Trundlenut if he hasn't already made contact. If you find out how its coded, please post-up, as my controller was supposedly coded by the dealer I bought it from, but still beeps when reversing a trailer. I'm not too familiar with VCDS, but have it/cable. Someone said it was in "convenience, but I've yet to find it. Maybe need a masterclass from Trundlenut next time I visit LE....

go into park distance controller (76 i think) and find long coding, sounds like some boxes need ticking so the unit knows a trailer is installed.

Mine just buzzes continually when bike rack is on towbar. Really makes no difference as I don't reverse for miles at a time.

Now that I've found the volume control for my sensors I've turned them down so it's not so annoying when reversing with my bike rack.

Thanks all for your advice.
