04 Octavia 1.9tdi just serviced. Correct oil used?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have just had my car serviced by the local garage.

Its a 04 plate Octavia 1.9tdi. from the service notification i think the car is on a 10'000 service interval...

they used this oil:

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-986-fuchs-titan-supersyn-ll-plus-0w-30-fully-synthetic-oil-for-vw-and-pd-diesel-engines.aspx

Is this oil ok/ the correct oil to use? i know its been covered plenty on here but it seems there's so many variations??

Please help in worried they could have put the wrong stuff in!! !! !!

I think it's over-specified for fixed service, but you won't do any damage beyond having spent a bt more than you needed on oil.

Thanks for the reply...

£71.94 for the oil & filter change. Does that sound ok??

You would have gotten the parts cheaper direct from the dealer, I think.

I agree with Huskoda; most service parts are cheap enough from the dealer, and they will match your engine/chassis number to make sure you get the right parts.

Changing the oil & filter on the 1.9 is pretty straightforward for a DIY job.

Unlike a lot of the 'tin can' type oil filters that you find mounted horizontally on most engines, the 1.9's disposable paper filter sits in an upright sort of metal cup, so less spills, or oil running down your arm.

The sump plug is also easy to get at once you've got the engine under tray off, and that's just a fiddly rather than a difficult operation. Getting the front of the car up on ramps or axle stands helps with clearance to work underneath, but it's not essential.

It's wise to invest in a torque wrench to do the job properly. You're dealing with steel-to-alloy (sump) and plastic-to-alloy (filter cap) joints that need to be just tight enough but definitely not too tight. It'll pay for itself with the first service.

The only problems you might have to face are under tray fasteners or a sump plug that the garage has replaced 'gorilla style' in a previous service. Torqued properly, none should be a difficult to remove. In the unlikely event that any one of them won't budge, you can just stop, and you will have lost nothing by trying. The filter and sump plug cost pennies, and you can use the oil for to-ups.

Look on YouTube for plenty of illustrated how-to's for this motor. Often US ones for Golf or Caddy.

Then use the money you save on labour to invest in the best oil (507). You've got to 'baby' those narrow cam lobes!
