04 Octavia TDi SE CEL and Limp problem.

Featured Replies

Hi,

This is my first post in here (second overall as I posted this in the MKII Octavia forum, I was advised to come here as I may have a MKI...although I don't know how to tell??), so hello everyone! I'm not very car savvy at all, so I do apologise for my glaring lack of technical knowledge!

I just bought an 04 plate Octavia TDi SE (130bhp), It's a cool motor, and I'm chuffed with it.

However, I have a Check Engine Light constantly on, and it starts up in, what I believe to be "Limp" mode. The turbo won't kick in, and the car lacks power and is very slow. If you turn it rapidly off, and then back on again, (or stall it, s I did the first time) it seems to reset, and the turbo kicks in as it should do, and does not go back into "limp" mode until the car has been stopped, and later restarted again. the CEL doesn't go out, at any point, whether it's in "limp" or not.

Does anyone have any ideas about this at all? Does anyone think the 'Mr Muscle' trick I've read about on here will work? I would really like to get this fixed as cheaply as possible, as soon as possible, as unfortunately, I may be out of a job soon, so I'm not going to be able to afford a massive bill :(

Thanks

Seano

You really need to get the fault codes read, I think only the 110 bhp engine gets the sticky vane turbo problem, tho I'm not 100% sure

How do I do that? Or who can do that? I'm sorry, I really don't know about cars! Guitars....yeah, what do you need to know...? hahaha

Er, I'm going to advise you to go somewhere else, but only because that's the easiest way to get the service you need.

Look at the top of page 1 of the VCDS forum for the list of members with VCDS, and PM one who lives near you. Take note that a VAG garage will charge you £50 to £100 for a fault code reading.

Either that or take it to a local garage with a fault code reader

If you do have sticking turbo vanes the Mr Muscle trick usually cures that, but until you get a diagnostic done it's pointless doing anything.

The give away for me was that you have a 1.9TDI with 130bhp.....on the Mk2 the 1.9 TDI's all have 105bhp (a 2.0 TDI was introduced on the Mk2 with 140bhp/170bhp)

But the easiest way is by looking at a pic of the two versions.

Ah cool, right, it is a MK1 then. I've got a mate with a iagnostic machine, he's gonna have a look for me!
