Took the Monte to Switzerland for a week

Featured Replies

Just been out to Switzerland for almost a week; dove out in one push covering 770 miles in around 19 hours and about 800 coming back due to UK road closures but in a quicker 18 hours.

Car behaved very well and despite two adults and a boot of luggage, plus an extra 10ltrs of fuel (just in case), there was plenty of go in the 86 TSI motor. Fuel computer registered from memory around 44 going and 46.5 coming back, although on the return leg we did get into the low 50's until we started hitting the 130k speed limits on the A23. Car also proved more than happy to sit at 130k in cruise for quite some miles when limits and traffic allowed obviously.

Decided to take non toll routes through France which added time to our journey, although we did get to see more than just whizzing by on a motorway. Surprised how quiet and dark France is during the later evening and early hours, even the street lights are turned off.

In the Alps we did find the brakes could be better and maybe a stronger clutch plate would be a good idea, got a little smelly on long hill climbs. Noticed a few Swiss registered Monte's; all well spec'd from my observations of those parked up, oh and they had rear discs rather than old tech drums.

Only other bug being the return of the left hand steering pull but only with a neutral or left camber, right camber as in Europe was spot on straight; strange, almost as if she's set up as a left hd :wonder:

I believe the torque steer that you're referring to is the same for most front wheel drive cars, LH or RH drive. The fact that you're driving in Europe on the right hand side of the road is purely coincidental in appearing to cancel out some of the torque steer. I might be wrong of course and stand to be corrected........
