2.0. TDI Gearbox problem

Featured Replies

Morning all , first a bit about me , i am a Cab Driver living in Brighton and have just bought a 55 plate Octavia Elegance from a work colleague whom is also a good friend. The car has only been a cab for the last 3 months , 1 previous owner FSH. My mate has had the belt , water pump and tensioners changed 6k ago (when he bought the car) along with the pads all round.

The engine is very quiet and its a great looking car , however ......

My mate "thought" that the clutch was going as there was a noise from that area , research showed me that a new set up could be achieved for around 600 quid so a deal was struck and i got 500 off the asking price .

It appears that the problem is in fact more serious ? I parked the car outside my house on the road which has a severe camber (the road) When i went out i noticed a puddle of fluid around the front N/S tyre (bear in mind that due to the road camber the N/S of the car would be sitting alot lower than the O/S )

Anyway in a panic i took the car 3 miles to my mechanic who got her up on the ramp on Friday afternoon and removed the splash guard / bottom cover and then we saw it........ A big hole next to where the driveshaft enters the box , something is missing and the gearbox oil is coming out !!

I found this thread on another site http://uk-mkivs.net/...s/t/191845.aspx do you guys reckon its the same type of thing ?

Im hoping that tomorrow the new "plug" will be fitted , gearbox topped up and the jobs a good un .

Am i being over optimistic ?

Thanks in advance......Tony.

hey hope this gets fine soon.

but there are very few cases in 2tdi.

I think its different from that thread you linked to - that was the inspection hole so you can see the timing mark on the flywheel, if oil came out of that then very bad things have happened and the clutch would be covered in oil.
