ac not working! where to start looking for problems?

Featured Replies

hi guys as above 1.8t 20v engine turn ac on via climate control all it does is change engine tone slightly.... i get no fans coming on! where do i start to find the problem? thanks

First up is to see if the clutch is kicking in on the compressor. If its not is it getting a live and earth to the clutch.

There are plenty of possible faults, diagnosis is required.

Re reading do you mean the interior fans aren't working at all?

Bar goes up but no air?

hi mate, i mean to fans on the AC rad, also how will i know if the clutch is working lol

Have you checked the fuses on top of the battery?

yeah they look all ok, when i put aircon on i hear the engine change tone and thats it no difference in air nothing :S

Sure it doesn't just need a regas as it won't work if there is no gas in system

it could be ? thing is tho im sure the ac rad fans should come on as soon as i turn it on is this right?

As Tech1e suggested in post #2, you need to check to see if the compressor shaft is turning. The a/c compressor pulley turns all the time. Inside the pulley is a clutch plate. You need to look at the nut in the centre of the of the clutch plate/pulley. Does it start turning when the a/c is switched on?

If there is no gas in system then fans will not work and compressor will just cut in and straight back out again,

when was the last time it was regassed as it does loose pressure over time

I wouldn't expect a change in engine tone if low gas was the only reason.
