not sure what to do

hi guy and girls.

not been on the forum long and if you have read my last post you will know of the problems i had with my last octavia estate.

well can lightning strick twice, well it appeares so.

had the second car now for a week and it has already started with problems so being a very nice man peter is he is going to give me my money back.

my problem is do i go for another octavia as i have been bitten twice or do i go for something else.

my wife like people carriers as they are high up and can see the road better.

i have been looking at the vw touran.

just want a bit of advise should i try and stick with the octavia or go for a touran or even something else.

any advise will be very great.

Now that is one car I do like but the funds say a big fat no to that.

What problems have you got with the car?

the clutch peddle vibrates judders when you push it up and down with the engine running, the car also vibrates at low speed, judders when i set of in first yet not all the time just now and then and more on a hill and the last thing is when i got home from the gaurage i stopped outside my drive then went to move and there was a funny tinny sound like the exhaust had come of but nothing so moved it back and forth still a tinny sound so went to park it up and it stopped and i havent heard it sine, very strange.

Hi if you buy a touran make sure you have a very good warranty I bought a ex-demo 5 years ago and from day 1 just problems would very buy another one.

Sounds like the DMF to me.

Also remember the Touran is based on the VAG A5 platform.......the same as the Mk2 Octavia. So mechanically both cars are virtually the same.

That's DMF for sure. Very similar to what mine was doing. Is it worth getting rid of it just for this?

it's done 93000 miles.

well I've only had it a week and they are not willing to put money in to fix it for some reason either they don't want to or they haven't got much money in it

and I don't have the money to spend on it.

so engine wise they are the same so if I get one that has had the timing belt clutch and flywheel is there anything else I should look out for.

bit of a dilemma on what I should get next.

heard so many good reports on this engine been bullet proof must just be very unlucky.

A car with 93000 miles is done in terms of life span. Yes cars will last alot longer, but the chances of you spending alot of money replacing worn parts is high.

For the dealer it's a straight financial decision as it'll cost them more to replace the DMF and clutch than they will probably loose (depending on what they gave for it) by offloading it at auction, assuming of course there's nothing else wrong with it you haven't discovered yet so it's easier and a safer bet for them to refund you. At least you've been offered your money back so it could have been worse. Maybe you could downsize and get a newer smaller car for the same money or put some more and get a newer Octy with fewer miles?

Really? A car with 93000 miles is done? I've seen 1.4 petrol Fiestas with over 250k on the clock, nothing ever changed apart from the usual consumables that you would expect over that mileage.

Just because needs a clutch, it does not mean it's life is over. If your printer runs out of ink, do you throw that away as well? How about if your kettle blows a fuse?

93000 miles is nothing at all on a modern, well maintained car.

I've just given away my Renault Kangoo as a present to a friend for it's an Euro3 diesel and law won't allow me to drive it a lot next winter. It has 170,000km and still going strong (ok, it's a Renault, so a few minor faults from new).

I've old Fiat taxis with 250,000 km on the clock. And they were TAXIS! The worst possible usage for a car.

VAG group cars are built better than French and Fiat cars but obviously you can incur in the unfortunate single car.

Re. the Touran, it was one of the cars in the shortlist when I decided to buy, mainly because of reliability and space (after owning a Kangoo, everything else seems small inside and big outside). I finally discarded it because I read many opinions about it being way too clumsy (remember it's much heavier than a comparable engine Octavia).

I get what you mean. The car isn't 'done' but is likely to need ongoing maintenance beyond standard services. If you don't have that slack in your budget to pay for it then higher mileage cars maybe aren't for you.

It's something that puts me off some older cars that look very nice and I could afford but I have to think, could I pay for it if the turbo went, two bearings etc etc. You have to cut your cloth accordingly.

People carriers never seem to do well in the reliability stakes.

Toyota Verso? Mate has one and is very happy.

I might have gone down the same route if the salesman had been bothered enough to not leave me waiting on my own in the showroom for 20 minutes after I'd booked a specific timed demo slot. Tool!

Nice to see somebody actually read my post correctly. Did I say cars are done at that age no,I said cars can go past that mileage. I was talking about predicted life span of a car to which point they will need parts replacing due to age and mileage. As for taxis, I used to work for partco/unipart, and taxis go through parts like there is no tomorrow

Unfortunately budget isn't very big and most if the cars I can afford all have high ish mileage so it will be the luck of the draw.

Both cars have been well looked after but you can never tell whats round the corner.

Fingers crossed 3rd time lucky.

If you are looking at cars with approaching 100k on the clock and can't spot a lemon yourself, why not pay for an AA inspection or similar for peace of mind?

Not being funny but you don't sound mechanically minded if you can't spot a failing DMF. Did you drive the car before accepting it as a replacement? If you like the car and that is all that is wrong with it tell them to fit you a new SMF kit as they have to give you a 3 month warranty if they are bona fide trade. Should cost them about £600 on a 1.9
