Sky ADSL

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Right now back in April of this year my mum decided to go over to sky to get the TV package, she also decided to have our 100mbps virgin media Fibre optic switched off so that we could have all of our service with sky. Now without asking which internet package to go for, she went for the cheapest i.e ADSL, which is quoted as 8Mbps off peak.

Now the problem is that, the "8Mbps" is off peak (actually closer to 3.5Mbps), on peak earlier today i had a whopping 0.5Mbps!

My mum wont let me call Sky up and she says that we are bound into an 18 month contract so we are stuck with the package....

As its well passed the "bedding in period" and the line should be fully functioning and I personally am pretty p!ssed at the performance!

It is getting beyond a joke when my Phones mobile internet is quicker than my wired connection!

So does anyone know a way to get out of the contract? or tips/what to try next?

Im writing this tonight, however my mum says she is going to call them tomorrow, but im not getting my hopes up about it, and thats why im asking here!

OK, I had the same issue with a friends internet who are with SKY. The speed was about the same 0.5Mbps. I called SKY and said that I had tested the line (remove the front BT plate and put the gateway and filter in the socket) and was getting a dreadfully slow speed (speedtest.net). I had a very helpful lady who tested the line and told me that it had been throttled back, she then said the line is actually good for in excess of 10Mbps. She opened the speed up to the maximum so that it could settle over the next day or so (standard ADSL process).

I am not saying you will have 10Mbps but only they can tell you the predicted speed, FYI:-my BT business ADSL is running around 6.5Mbps.

ok cheers for that.

All my figures to date have been based on Speedtest.net. one thing i didnt mention was the fact that my pings are also consistently above 25ms. peak of 77ms. :(

Call SKY, if you get no sense ask for second tier support ;)

Hi Taylor.

I am assuming you have the Sky Sr101 Router?

If you do open Internet explorer and go to http://192.168.0.1 (Enter the username and password, if not changed it will be on the back of the SR101)

When the page loads up copy that information and paste it on here for me to see please. It should look something like this

System Up Time: 109:34:29 Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collision Pkts Tx b/s Rx b/s Up Time WAN PPPoA 64699839 3387747309 0 98512393 100765174 24:07:09 LAN Up 3269884 2789607 0 49119 719201 109:34:29 WLAN Up 3328705 1821653 0 0 68 109:34:03 Broadband Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 21018 kbps 1213 kbps Line Attenuation 18.5 dB 11.4 dB Noise Margin 3.4 dB 9.9 dB

This will tell me what speed your line is syncing up at, It will also tell me what SNR the line has which plays a big factor on speed.

Better still print screen if you can - the copy and paste function does not work right well. It should look like this

So my downstream:

4090 kbps

57 dB of line att.

5.7 dB Noise

Upstream

798 kbps

33.9 dB line Att.

15.15 dB Noise

is your mum paying for the interweb on her own, or do you offer something towards it? If you don't, perhaps you could try and persuade her that you would be happy to pay the difference if she can go with the fibre again (at least once the current deal ends) :) It does sound like your mum was trying to save money though

Sorry to be blunt Taylor, but why did you 'cut off' a perfectly good and BLISTERINGLY quick internet connection in favour of a net connection via your telephone line??

What was SOOO good about sky that made you leave Virgin Media?

Please dont mention Sky Sports as that's such a lame reason :p

The other thing is most providers always use the phrase "up to" when quoting speeds and never give you an amount of time you will actually be able to reach the max speed quoted.

I didnt cut it off! lmao my mum did.

I was willing to drop form 100Mb to the 40M fibre (although its not completely fibre) service from sky. As we only had the Internet package from virgin, with no tv or phone line we just had freeview I suggested getting Sky TV, so i pay the £26 amonth for Sky + the Extra package to get discovery channels etc.

The idea was that Sky Tv + Phone + Internet was cheaper than Virgin Fibre Optic + Sky Tv.

We had a look at the Tevo box etc but mum didnt like it! lol

If you're supposed to be on sky's fibre product then the engineer isn't supposed to leave the premises until it's working properly. I cant remember the figure but if it's below a certain speed then it's deemed broken. And for a 40 meg service, 3 mbs would definitely be deemed as not working.

I have sky and it is rock solid at 40meg downstream and 10 upstream.

I wanted Sky Fibre, but my mum chose the cheapest option without asking which one i thought we should go for haha

She / He has not got the fibre service. Looking at the information he provided he is using ADSL.

Also - On that note the information you provided me seems OK.

Try the following;

Change your wireless Password - Someone may be using your internet, thus causing lower than expected speed for you.

Ensure you dont have things open on your PC or any other connected to your Router like Skype (Your PC can be used as a Node with skype which again will slow you down

Make sure you have fully scanned yours or any machine that is using your internet (Your PC may be infected & being used to scan for other machines without antivirus or even worse being using for DDOS)

Out of interest - Can you do a speedtest on the Sky website? the link is below

http://www.skyuser.co.uk/speedtester/

So why not just upgrade to Sky fibre if it's available where you are?

So why not just upgrade to Sky fibre if it's available where you are?

Ha, Sky don't even know where fibre is... When I switched from Virgin to Sky I were advised Fibre is available - Then got an email informing me I need to call Sky as something has happened to my order. Called them to be told I can only have ADSL and fiber is about a year off yet :(

The switch from Virgin at first were a little bit disappointing as the speeds were slower than what I were getting however I am now not being traffic managed by Virgin! So for example if I were to download a file at 10GB - Virgin would start off speedy quick around 3mb until I got throttled then Sky would be quicker and download the file quicker as I am at a constant 2mb with Sky.

Thing is Sky Fibre isnt Fibre, It still uses ADSL lines from the exchanges, so its limited to 40Mb.

I have the Wlan disabled on the sky router and it uses a separate router with a WPA2 16 digit password.

To be honest the main thing i wanted to know is is the service operating as it should be? (S0nix appears to have confirmed that) in which case, How can we get out of the contract? lol

When you signed up you would of got a letter giving you an estimate speed. Looking at what you have provided me did that letter say 2 - 4mb? If it said anything more then call Sky and investigate - They may even knock some money off your bill if it does turn out they cant provide the estmated speed they sent you (this was not the upto 8mb btw)

You have 57dB of line att - which tells me you are a far way from the exchange so 4MB to be sounds OK.

If you're doing a speed test via wifi, make sure you're not on a congested channel. Try an app on your mobile called wifi analyzer

But Sky 40mb FTTC is a much better proposition than traffic shaped to hell Virgin.

So again, why do you want to get out of the contract instead of just upgrading to Sky fibre?

ahem, it is fibre. The product is of a type called FTTC or fibre to the cabinet. The change here (clue is in the name) is it does away with the copper line between the exchange and the cabinet. It then uses the copper line from the cabinet to your house. It uses an Openreach product called GEA. You can choose between the 40 or the 80 meg service. Full fibre to the home would cost a lot as they would need to dig up every street in the land to get fibre to your house.

My ADSL service used to be 3 Meg, my fibre service is 40 (it's fast enough so why pay for 80?). Both were with Sky.

I'm sure if the OP were able to persuade his mum then Sky would be delighted to upgrade you to their fibre service.

FTTC effectively makes the fast bit of the network (i.e. your ISPs backbone) closer to you. The connection between your house and the cabinet is still done via copper lines.

precisely, you get fibre between the exchange and a nearby cabinet.
