FABIA 1 ESTATE TAILGATE LOCK

2002 Fabia 1, 1.9TDi Estate

Does the tailgate lock within the tailgate itself have an electrical locking component in it or is it simply a mechanical latch. If it has an electrical locking component how could I test it with multi-meter if I remove the interior panel and gain access to it?

Neither of my tailgate interior lights work although the bulbs are OK and I believe the switch for these is also incorporated in the tailgate lock.
