Rear Wheel Rattler

Featured Replies

On my Octavia, when the rear nearside wheel runs over a bump in the road or a drain cover, there is a noise like someone jangling a bunch of keys outside the car.

Anyone any ideas where to start with this one?

Thanks

Broken coil spring maybe??

It was the rear shock cover on mine when I had a similar noise.

Clearance between inner tyre wall and wheel arch liner is very tight. Found a bulge on the tyre sidewall which was catching the liner as it turned. It made a droning noise above 30mph but if liner is loose I suppose it could rattle.

Low thickness pads rattling in the caliper maybe?

If thats possible.

Start by pumping that quarter manually and listening for clicks or clangs... with all windows open drive slowly over a speed bump or a low curb...

You sure it's nearside only ? often it seems that way because that's where the road is worst, couldn't simply be loose items in tyre well.

Stone guard on the rear disk or exhaust heat shield?

steve33 is spot on - it was a corroded piece of retaining metal fallen off the shock cover, hanging on the brake line and rattling when going over a bump. Easily fixed by taking it off and throwing it in the bin.
