Reducing wheel hop

Featured Replies

Im the happy owner of a mk2 octavia vrs tsi dsg but am not too pleased with the wheel hop on the car if making a spirited get away.

I have been looking at various options for reducing this I.e walk, uprated lower engine mount etc.

What do you peepa recommend?

Do you get the same when you switch off the Traction Control?

Yeah its very annoying to be honest

Right foot requires adjustment.

^ easier and cheaper than technical fixes.

Tyre choice and weather probably plays a big part. I've never noticed it with the TC off.

the WALk/SALK is supposed to be a big help, never got it yet, but mines is no where near as bad now, almost non existant in fact, I have a Neuspeed torque arm insert, and THS Engine and gearbox mounts.

TBH you shouldnt need the upgrades if you are running stock power, but I found it needed a little help when I tuned it.

Did you find the engine mounts made a lot more noise and vibration?

I'm running a similar spec as you and found the Audi TT wishbone inserts helped a lot.

On K03 I used to get it a lot of hop as it was just on the gripping point of the tyres. With K04 I find it just lights the tyres up as opposed to hopping.

The insert makes the most vibration, but only in reverse and very very slightly on idle. other mounts make no difference in vibration, but do increase the noise, sounds stock on idle and normal driving, but sounds a lot beefier when giving it the beans! I wouldnt change them, very happy with them.

Both are noticably noisier and more vibrations when first installed, but after about 500-1000 miles they bed in nicely! bear in mind this is the mounts I have fitted, there are others out there which are firmer/noisier etc!

very interested in your car! get a build thread up! which K04 have you?

zero hop on mine when i had the tt arms (and bushes) and the stiff bilsteins.. i get some hop now on s3 arms and bushes with h&rs but still less than stock and the trade off is better ride quality vs bilsteins. that's on stock power btw.

you on stock power Rob? for some reason I thought you were tuned!

old car was, this one is completely stock (well, engine-wise anyway!)

I had my K04 kit fitted by Will at Performance Torque. It makes a very healthy output in torque and hp. I will write one up at some point soon

Get it sorted Rob! all those handling mods without more power almost seems a waste!!! :)

I think looking at the ths mounts for cost it looks a no brainer. Cheers

TBH Im still considering the bottom THS mount also, to complete the set!

I was going to suggest 4wd. I had wheel hop with my remapped 2.0pd DSG Octavia. I changed it for a Haldex equipped car. Solved the problem. Traffic light GP? No wheel spin whatsoever.

But I guess that is out of the question.

Get a 4x4 Octy and fit all your gear to it.

so you can't get wheel hop through all four wheels?! You sound like you're lacking proper power. ;)

True

I'm only running about half what you are

my thoughts always were with engine mounts especially the lower gearbox mount. Being DSG it can be a little abrupt which i think also adds to the hopping sensation

I spent AU$17 on a 98duro (hardest available - only found out after :() torque arm insert. Its a piece of poly*something* that fills the holes in the bottom engine mount - solved my wheel hop problems for good!

When it was first put in it had so many vibrations I almost told the blokes to put the hoist back up and take it out, but 500km later most of the vibrations were gone. 2,500km later I don't even know I have it, except when I plant it out of a corner with wheel spin its as flat as anything - and flooring it off traffic lights in wet or dry, if it doesn't spin both wheels it will just explode forwards. Very impressive!!

mike, wheel hop is caused by the engine rocking back and forth. A lower engine mount is what you need.

can I just say that the engine and gearbox made a big difference too, but if you are only doing one, as vRSy said, the lower mount is the biggest factor, but can also apparently cause the most vibrations!

For the price of them you may as well go for a full set.

What id recommend is approach someone like Alex @ AKSTuning and see about organising a group buy. He'll sort you great prices then if you add the group buy onto here and Mk5GTI.co.uk you'll easily meet the numbers required.
