Radiator Fan?

Featured Replies

Picked up my new 2.0 TDI Elegance today and drove around no problem. Took it on a bit longer journey tonight, maybe 40mins, up and down the motorway and around the houses a bit.

When I pulled it into the garage, knocked off the engine and locked the car the engine/radiator fan kicked in for a couple of minutes....is this normal? I'm guessing it is given that the engine would be hot and required cooling now that the coolant wasn't running around it.

Should I be worried or do you think it's fairly normal for this to happen?

Thanks men.

My previous cars fan worked for a while without ignition, but this one stops when I take out ignition.

, I think It's well done, check temp cluster guage and if ok don't worry

have you got clima?

Its just finishing a regen!

The temperature gauge was normal yes....I have automatic climate control....it was fine all day until the longer drive tonight...I'm guessing it's ok, will keep an eye on it over the weekend.

Thanks

Its just finishing a regen!

Sorry, not had a diesel before....is this where it's clearing the DPF? Why would the fan kick in doing that?

Ta

My Green line MKII used to do that when it was new and when i did long journeys, but it stopped doing it now.

Sorry this is incorrect. If the fans come on after the ignition has been switched off while a passive regen was taking place the regen has been interupted-it's not finishing it, it's cooling everything down because its been interupted before its finished as the DPF runs at a higher temp during a regen. Normally when a regen finishes the car cools down naturally as you drive, but because the var has stopped it cant do this. Questions for ninjoid. How noisy were the fans. If it's just the normal fan volume it's not a regen issue. When an interupted regen happens both fans go flat out and make quite a din. On the cr.engine normally you'll get no dash lights on if it's doing a passive regen, but the engine will tick over at a higher rpm. Instead of 850 ish it'll be 1000 or higher. The engine note may be different too and probably the engine will smell hot. As you've only just got your new car it's unlikely to be e regen issue unless you have something like a.faulty sensor, it's more likely just a hot new engine cooling down. If you're concerned have a chat with your dealer. HTH

Thanks Ade that's really helpful...the fans were noisy and I could feel the heat from the engine in the garage...it did smell too. I'll keep an eye on it over the weekend and if so pop into the dealers on Monday as I'm off work.

Happy to help mate. last time I had one (an interupted regen that is) I parked outside an industrial unit and you could hear the fans inside-thats how loud they get! I'm no expert but just seems a little strange you'd get a regen so soon. Did you notice the higher than normal tickover-there's a guide on the skoda website on DPFs which is worth a read, one fkr pds and another for crs-go via the FAQ's section at the bottom of the home page 'owning a skoda' link. Let us know how you get on. Interupted regens arn't a big deal in themselves, but you need to avoid having repeated ones before it does a full cycle (you know it's finished when tickover goes back to normal) if you interupt a cycle it won't do another jntil the soot you have managed to burn off before you stopped the car has built up again. Short journeys and stop start motoring are best avoided if you've got a DPF. Otherwise enjoy!

I couldn't hear the fan once I was inside the house, so that's maybe a good sign. Nah didn't notice anything other than the fan starting for a few minutes once I'd powered off and locked the doors...as soon as I clicked lock on the keyfob it started.

Will take it out for a lengthy run on Saturday and see what happens when I get back home.

Sorry this is incorrect.

That'll teach me to type the abridged version? ;)

Or, couper les cheveux en quatre.

No worries-been there done that! It's one of the things with a forum, often posting a reply that you know the answer to but missimg bits out normally because you're keen to help the OP asap.

I wasn't trying to do anything other than help the OP, which I'm sure you'll appreciate.

DPFs are a PITA though- I used to like booting my old renault 2.2 tdi and giving tailgaters a lung full!

All the best

Ade

I had this on my octy II. Felt like is was going for 10 mins

Whether it was finishing or interrupted I would not worry too much, as it is normal.

Enjoy the car.

Also happened to me on my 2.00 Elegance DSG Revs at 1000 fan full on .Dealer said it was doing a regen.

Took it for a run as per instruction manual for 20mins came back home switched off no more probs and been ok
