Binding Caliper

Featured Replies

Morning

I have a 02 110 Tdi 5dr that passed the mot yesterday with just one advisory - binding o/s rear caliper. Is there a easy fix or do I get it replaced. Could do with a set of discs & pads also. Car does not get used every day and has done 99000 miles. Are there any preventative measures to stop this in the future?

Cheers.

Alex

Mine did this and it was the crud that had built up and was stopping the pads moving smoothly, there was nothing wrong with the caliper. I stripped them down and cleaned them and everything was fine after.

The rubber sleeves on the pistons perish/ get damaged over time allowing gunk to build up and retard the operation of the caliper. As trundlenut suggests strip down and clean out and it should sort the problem

I know others shop around on EBay but I pick my bits up from GSF. They're not too expensive and readily have stock available so should source the pads and discs without breaking the bank

Are there any preventative measures to stop this in the future?

Not really as the rears do so little work they are more prone to this. Good strip down and clean when changing disks and pads is the only thing you can do.

I found that shims which sit between the pad and calliper were a bit rusty and there was a lot of crud. Consequently the pads weren't sliding smoothly and not pressing flat against the disc. The calliper and piston were working OK.

Should be an easy fix either way

How did you get on Octolex?
