Good Summing Up of Skoda...

Featured Replies

"-sensible, understated without being depressingly austere, yet also quietly maverick and with just a hint of post-Cold War cool."

From Giles Smith's review of the Octavia 2.0 TDI Elegance estate in today's Sunday Times - four (out of five) stars.

:giggle: ... I like that, "just a hint of post-Cold War cool."

Keep 'em comin' Skoda :sun:

Sounds like a back-handed compliment to me!

"with just a hint of post-Cold War cool."

Looks like an irrelevant sound-bite to me.

Can anyone explain exactly what it means (if it means anything at all)?

The daily mash explained it a while back.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

I now understand exactly what the author, and the OP ( :giggle: ) meant.

Not really any need for that - are you always so rude?

To be fair the summary itself is spot on - I just don't get the "post-Cold War cool" bit. Maybe the phrase has more cultural significance in mainland Europe than in the UK?

How about Skaudeatwagon? As they seem to share so many components.

The entry in the Uxbridge Concise socio-idiomatic cross-reference dictionary states that "Post cold-war cool" is middle class soeak for "Less than lush" in contemporary street-cred speak.

In English, it probably means that whilst the interior fittings are traditionally VW i.e. Mildly austtere and functional, there"s still more than enough room in the boot to smuggle three East Germans sporting "Das Kapital is fun" Teeshirts in comfort through check-point Charlie, were it to still exist.

How's that on the pretension scale ?

You're off the scale. Well done :giggle:

Some Kind Of Downmarket Audi

Which to be fair is leaps and bounds ahead of the skip jokes of old.

Then the inverse is also true: Audi, just an upmarket Skoda. I can see a whole new ad campaign running off the back of that.............not!!

And yes, I got the acronym!
