170cr tdi engine noise - issue?

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I have noticed a noise coming from my car, it might just be me being anal but you can here it clearly when sat in the car. If you try and listen for it under the engine bay you can't hear it.

May be something some of the tech guys here know what it is. Be sure to turn the volume up as the audio can be quiet.

Cheers

Is the heat shield rubbing off the exhaust pipe?

Does the noise stop when you switch A/C on. I have the same sound which goes when A/C is switched on

Yes! I went to Skoda today and he was switching the air con on and off and the sound went when the air con was on and started again when it was off. He said it could be a belt and that they will take a look when they do the cam belt in a few months. He did say that its nothing to worry about as its probably the dry/warm weather causing it. He also said to try WD40 on the belt and if the sound goes after spraying it it confirms its the belt. I am going to try this when I get back home from work tomorrow.

Bought my car with 13,000 miles and 11 month old and it has made the noise since i bought it. Now on 50,000 and not got any worse. I think it comes from behind the dash because i cant hear it from under the bonnet. Let me know how you get on with the WD40.

Hi mate how did you get on with the WD40

I have the same issue. Sounds like someone with a file rubbing away at my gearbox lol. Any luck with the WD40? If so what belts did you spray?

Spraying belts with WD40? Are they mad?

WD40 is a lubricant!!!!

Its actually a water displacer ;-)

M/C earplugs are the way to go no odd noises no nagging lovelly silence.Or ware a crash helmet and pretend your the Stig.

Its actually a water displacer ;-)

Here's a quote from WD40's website listing all the things it does:

THE FIVE BASIC FUNCTIONS:

LUBRICATES: WD-40's lubricating ingredients are widely dispersed and hold firmly to all moving parts.

REMOVES: WD-40 gets under grease, grime, and gunk. WD-40 non-aerosol formulas also dissolve adhesives, allowing easy removal of labels, tape, stickers, and excess bonding material.

PROTECTS: WD-40 protects metal surfaces with corrosion-resistant ingredients to shield against moisture and other corrosive elements.

PENETRATES: WD-40 loosens rust-to-metal bonds and frees stuck, frozen or rusted metal parts.

DISPLACES MOISTURE: Because WD-40 displaces moisture, it quickly dries out electrical systems to eliminate moisture-induced short circuits.

My wifes Seat Altea XL 170 CR has exactly the same sound. It was booked in on Monday for a warranty check to distinguish the sound but topically it didn't do it until I was on my way home, how annoying. I said I'd try to record the sound and take it in for him to listen to. Be interesting to see what results the WD40 brings.

I tried the WD40 and if im honest I haven't heard it (noticed) it at all recently. I believe its the belt for the AC that makes the noise as when I used to hear the noise I could make it go away by switching on the AC.

Hope that helps

The noise on mine sounds very similar to the noise my washing machine makes when the pump has pumped all the water out and is still pumping (dry) before the spin.

Might be the A/C gas is getting low.

Been in to Seat today and got the wifes Altea booked in for the 5th of August to get it looked at, the mechanic listened to it and said he's had a few cars in lately with the same noise and it was generally the air con pump on its way out. He said I may need a new compressor and pump so I hope that's covered on my warranty!

Ill keep u updated.

Had mine in to the stealers today due to this noise. Diagnosed compressor fault and replaced the compressor under warranty. This is a £700+ fix if out of warranty.

Had my car into the dealers yesterday as the noise was still there just not as loud, it seems louder during hot weather. Dealers were very helpful, I explained that it may be nothing but the noise is there and other people have the same noise and one person (above) has had it diagnosed as a compressor fault. After having a good look under the bonnet & using a stethoscope to pin point the noise they believe it is the compressor. They are replacing the compressor, pipes etc to make sure the issue is ruled out. Its booked in for Thursday and is being covered on the extended warranty included when I bought the car, thumbs up Faintree Skoda!

Will let you know if the issue goes after the work has been done. :-)

Wd40 eats rubber... I wouldn't spray it on belts.

Work was completed yesterday and so far so good. Sound has gone and every time I have got in the car since the repair I have been trying to listen for it and the noise has definitely gone. A+ to Skoda for fixing it for me, the warranty runs out next month also :-)  Compressor for air con was the issue.
