Heavy steering when turning corners

Featured Replies

Hey folks.

Done some searching around but most the the problems relate to either intermittent heavy steering or warning lights.

Basically the car went in for suspected faulty ignition switch under warranty. They got a new and fitted and in doing so broke the ignition barrell.

Fast forward 7 weeks... got the car back and everything working well.

One thing I have noticed is that when turning a corner the steering feels heavy. It's fine for just turning slightly when driving but turning into junctions etc feels quite heavy.

Not sure if I'm going mad and that it was maybe like that before. It could be that the super (horribly) light steering the Ibiza FR 1.6 TDI they loaned us has made going back to the Octavia's heavier steering more noticible but just cannot be sure.

It is perfectly plausible that while replacing the barreall they have refitted the steering angle sensor incorrectly etc hence why I'm not sure.

So my question are:

Is it normal that the steering feel varies depending how much the wheel is turned (in that it is heavier and more you turn- more feedback from the road etc)?

Is there a way to check the sensor is working properly? Where in VCDS would I check this?

Many Thanks

Phil

Knowing what those muppets are like at Dm kieth & id say they have broken/bodged something. :-) Mine is a vrs as you know but mine doest vary in feel as im turning/going round corners.

You can change the switch & barrel without removing the steering wheel or sensor etc, only thing i can think of is they broke the casing thats part of the column & they have changed that which would involve removing/disturbing the steering parts.

Yes I since found out that they didn't need to touch the barrell so was very annoyed that they broke it.

Will have a tinker tonight and see if I can find anything on VCDS relating to the steering angle and see what happens to the numbers when turning the wheel etc.

I think I will take it to Benfield at Harrogate next time...

Oh and if there is something wrong with the steering sensor then I'm surprised it hasn't put a light on the dash...

Think I'm being paranoid now... maybe that's just how a car feels all the time when going round corners... :wonder:

Think I am now officially cracking up...

I had a play when I got home.

Started the car and turn the wheel lock to lock and no change in the feel.

I then hooked up VCDS went into measuring blocks in steering assist and watched the angle as I turned the wheel... all ok and no outages of the pump etc.
