Fabia 1.4mpi

Featured Replies

Hi all, just seeing how high mileage wise people have taken there engines? Mines got 130k at present.

Still tight, no rattles. Gearbox is excellent.

Ours is 11 years old & has just hit 90k. Touch wood still running really well & quite a nice little box! With the right care I reckon these engines can deliver a shed load of miles. Just had the dreaded ARB/bushes replaced & all quiet again!

Driving wise the Felly is more my cup of tea but must say am impressed with our Fab

Glad to hear it, mines 13 years old. Had the head done by a previous owner so hopefully I will get a few more years out of it.

Don't know if your in the same boat but can't get more than 40mpg out of it and that's sitting at 50 every day on a dual carriageway with no stop starts. Just an old engine technology I think.

Mines a 51 plate, so 12 year old and it's a couple of hundred under 110K. Had the chain and water pump changed last month and it sounds good.

With your chain did it snap? Or was it just loose. How did you know to change it. Mine gives quite a nice Whiney noise when accelerating, not sure if that's just how they sound, or it's a sign of wear!

I think they just tend to become increasingly more noisy/rattly with age/mileage & the change interval is recommended at 120k. I've not heard of that many actual failures but obviously they do occur!

MPG wise I'd say we definitely exceed 40 on a longer motorway type run but of late I'm sure it's dropped away overall & tbh not sure why? Perhaps others can shed some light on declining MPG & suspect causes in the case of the 1.4 unit.

The mileage on mine dropped dramatically a few months ago. At first I assumed it was because of the winter, small engines always use more petrol in the cold. But when it didn't return to normal in the spring, i started to worry. When i bought it last march i could get it down to 6.2l / 100km, nowadays it does around 10l / 100km. That's about what my 400bhp Mercedes does when I'm driving it like a wuss.

That said mine is shot to hell. MFG in 2000, 125k on the clock (I think its time to change the chain), my suspension is shot, my clutch is nonexistent and I got no bushes either. And now the brakes have started pulsing too. I'm tearing it down in august. Until then is banished to the corner of shame. Poor bugger took some abuse the last few months.

That's exactly what I thought over winter/spring this year but tbh I don't think it's returned to what we were getting before, regardless of the fact that it's been regularly serviced & we try to be light on the right foot! More investigation required me thinks & perhaps a diagnostic session would help?

Your old girl sounds like a real workhorse & as you say is due a few replacements. Earlier this year we had a period of slight judder/pulsing on the brakes but then required replacement discs/pads to help her through the MOT. They don't alter the pulse rate performance wise but are great at what they do!!

All the best,

Rob  ;)

If your asking me that question as robk1 said it just started rattling a little more than when I first got it so I decided it was time to get it changed and I can hardly hear it now, even the mechanic said it was getting a little stretched so I would advise getting it changed if its near to the 100k mark

Yeah, discs and pads are a definite replacement. Also going over to coilies instead of stock springs and shocks, I'm also going to invest in a tad better clutch, new bushes all around and probably a respray as well. With all the small rust spots I've got loads of discolouration due to the mix of old+new paint. Besides, I'm tired of the green bonnet. (That's what you get for buying a car at night. I though it was black.)

Havnt noticed a rattling at all really on mine, checked the history and hasn't been done yet. Might put it on the list along with cutting the suspension stops of the rear end as they have come off and rattle every time I go over bumps, clean rust off the drum brakes and thinking of putting a set of alloys on it, vrs wheels or something.

Car is in good condition body wise, a cheeky set of alloys will brighten it up.

Make sure to paint the rear drums in something relatively rust resistant.  I swapped out my rear drums in October last year and rust bubbles have started to form. It looks like the old three year old ones i replaced. I've used Hammerite in the past, but call it laziness or just plain stupidity, I failed to do it this time. And now my drums look like ****e. The coat of paint doesn't affect the brakes at all.

Silver hammerite might do the trick, I think they might of been silver when new.
