Fitting A Tow-bar and Pulling A Caravan

Featured Replies

I have a 1.9TDI estate and we are thinking of getting a caravan. Would the car pull a caravan and how much to get a tow-bar fitted.

A 2-part question. First part, yes, though it does depend on the size of the caravan. More specifically the weight.

The maximum towing weight with a braked trailer/caravan is some where between 750- 800 Kg, so check the weight of any caravan you're considering, & remember to allow for everything in it. That would usually dictate the size of 'van.

The maximum trailer weight for a braked trailer/caravan on the Fabia varies according to the engine size. On the 1.9 PD it is 1200Kg......assuming you keep away from gradients greater than 8%.

I imagine this limits the type of caravan you can tow to smaller 2 berth models, but I may be wrong. Of course there is the recommendation that you should not tow more than 85% of the curb weight of your car. This puts the maximum towing weight at just under 1000kg, but as long as you drive carefully you can tow up to the maximum towing weight of your care safely and legally.
