Problem with newly fitted Turbo (Sorted)

Featured Replies

So I had my KKK 130 blow up on me 2 weeks ago and finally had the turbo (PD150) arrive today.

Got to work cleaned absolutely everything that involved the turbo as to make sure there was no problems with dirt or foreign objects going in or out of it! All gaskets replaced everything tightened as should be. Disconnect the fuse for the fuel and cranked the engine a few times to get the oil circulating. The fitting I thought went extremely smoothly. So finally started her up and left her idling for about 30 minutes before touching it to make sure oil was circulating as should. Took it out for a drive to see, it sounds fine while idling but when on boost i get this screeching sound which gradually gets higher as the more boost that is put on.

What i think it sounds like

The blades rubbing off the turbo wall. If this was the case would it not do it on idle? The turbo was reconditioned only this morning and have graph to show it was pretty smooth!

The only problem i have is a tiny boost leak in the connecting hose that comes off of the turbo one of the little clippy things has a hole in it but i doubt that could cause this sound???(I have the forge replacement pipe arriving on monday morning!)

In some serious need of someone with experience here need this car running any help would be appreciated!!!

I really hope its a boost leak I updated with a video to help!

Boost leak right off the turbo sounds like that!

Closer to the turbo the louder the screech

haha, after reading this I reckon I must have had a small boost leak for at least 18 months :(

I'm afraid to drive the car as I only got the turbo today and it doesnt sound like any boost leak ive ever hear although ive only ever had one other turbo car (octavia rs)

I always thought a small whistle on boost was normal :|

I'm pretty sure a small whistle is normal but if you listen to the video I posted this is not really a whistling sound!

Edit* got this sorted

Replaced the turbo outlet pipe with a forge and it quietened it a bit but it was still happening! So inspected further and found my freshly cleaned inlet manifold had sut on it. So investigated it some more turned out there was air blowing out of it! Do not let friends help! The few bolts my friend tightened didn't tighten them enough let's just say he is no longer a good friend for having me **** my self about it!

Better to keep him as a mate and guilt him into pint buying, surely? Cross of "Capable car maintenance" from his skills sheet though. :)

It was an awkward bolt to get at. I recall that it only took you a quarter turn to tighten it fully.

I'll rememember next time when you ask me to dedicate my entire saturday off work to help you ;)

Pints are on YOU  :giggle:  :whew:
