Few jobs to do on my VRS, and help/advice.

Featured Replies

Hi people

I swapped my Golf MK3 VR6 with a 279bhp BVR engine in the other day for a MK1 Octavia VRS 2003.  She has done 127k with full history till 111k.  Good condition but not gleaming to my standards, but I am mopping her next week so should come up well.

So far though.....

She is making a kind of metal noise if that makes any sense when I go over bumps, say country lanes for example. This noise seems to be coming from around the passenger from wheel side?   Also on start up the engine is not that quiet yet she had an oil change 800 miles ago, sounds like it is 'ticking'......I thought it might be an exhaust leak?

I have read so much about these engines and everyone is saying to do the oil pick up pipe so going to attempt that, is it a difficult job though?

All else is good.  Cleaned out the TB as it was full black build up in there. Fitted an OE air filter as the last one had seen better days. New plugs arriving tomorrow and must order a new crank breather pipe as mine has split.

All in all a good car, Very practical and so far good on fuel. I only use Shell V-Power so I hope these engines are ok with that as always used that fuel in my other cars.

Thanks for any help in advance :)

Arb bushes & Secondary air pump. Both very common and easily fixed.

I have both of your symptoms.

Thank you.......Are the bushes and secondary air pump expensive?

Also, when I get in my car and put the key in the ignition it makes a beeping noise, this noise lasts for say 10 seconds then stops, yet no warning lights are on the dash and she passed her MOT the other week?  The previous owner had her MOT'd.  She has advisorys for.....

1....Minor exhaust gas leak

2.... Oil level too high (Over filled)

3.... Inside clip missing from CV gaiter.

Ticking could also be the charcoal canister, perfectly normal for it to click.

Beeping is probably the seat belt warning, try putting the seat belt on first, shouldn't beep then

2 more questions!!

How ard is the oil pick up pipe job to do?

Also a few of my neighbours are saying 'Why have you got a Skoda' followed by some joke.  To be very honest I am not bothered by what they think as it is a lovely car and just right for what I need as I have a 15 year old daughter, a 5 year old daughter and an American Bulldog weighing 7 stone so he fits nice and snug in the boot. Plus it has everything I need, very good performance, looks, remote central locking, air-con, etc etc.....Just wondering how many others on here have had the 'Why have you got a Skoda'  and the old Skoda jokes that were around in the early 80's when I was at school and what were/are your replies to these people?

We all get the jokes, but its part of the fun of owning a skoda.

ARB Bushes are cheap to sort either yourself or at a local garage.

The SAI is a fix, there are guides on the forum if yours is leaking or just pull out the relay as I have done, so now more noise. But EML light will come on.

It's normal for the noise, car will run rough for a minute, but then be fine. You might not have a problem.

The seat belt warning can be stopped by unplugging the seat belt connector under the drivers seat.

SAI is no big deal to fix, & unless its causing the ECU to throw a code I wouldn't rush to fix it as should turn off after about 45 secs.

These days Skoda jokes really only come from people with no knowledge about cars. Skoda's are VW's in different clothes really, Octavia's share most of their parts with a mkiv Golf, & you don't hear people slagging Golf's off.

Oil pick up is an easy job on the transverse VAG 1.8t's enigines, but a pita on the longtitudal engined cars like Passat/ Audi A 4 etc.

Just make sure you have a long ball ended allen key to get to the awkward bolts holding the sump on

Pretty sure mine were 5mm, it was over a year ago though

Thank you!  The 5mm one on Ebay I have just checked out is 128mm (Just over 5" or 12.8cm) long, wonder if this will be long enough?

Also.....My tyres were all inflated to 40psi, I think this is way to high?  They are on standard VRS alloys with 205/15/17 tyres.  I have taken them all to 35psi, or should they be running higher?

32ish isnt it ?

Should say on the fuel filler flap

2.3bar front, 2.6bar rear from memory lol

Or it could of been 2.5 rear. Wouldn't let me edit my last post ffs

I run my 225/45s at 35 front 32 rear. Handles a bit better methinks.

I often get the Skoda comments at meetings but they all drive teeny girl cars so I take it with a pinch of salt. I'm just happy in the knowledge mine will blow theirs into the weeds.

2.1 front 2.3 rear for two adults. More for loads.

Personally, having an estate which is often loaded, and only 16" wheels, I find my Avons run much better with 33 front and 35 rear.

I wouldn't run softer than spec on the rear unless you have a decent rarb fitted. There is already too much grip on the rear, and too much rear grip plus under-inflated tyres can only equal more wallow when changing direction quickly.
