This may be a dumb question but how do you know the air con is on?

Or what do I need to do to turn it on

Temp to lo is on in the normal sence. Auto means its always on.

That is not strictly true.  There is an on/off button, but the Octavia has it blanked off, whereas the golf has the button and an led.  To convert it, all you need to do is remove the blanking plate from the top half of the fan speed dial and remove a small part of the back.  When you refit it, you will have a stealth on/off switch. 

That isnt air con on and off though, that turns off the entire HVAC system.

To guarantee the air con is on turn both temps down to Lo, and as long as the Econ LED is not on and the outside temperature is above about 5c, the air con is running.   

 

Of course when the weather is hot, even when the climate control is set to 21 degrees, the air con will be running to maintain the selected temperature.
