aircon smells damp....

Featured Replies

As above when i use my aircon it smells like damp. Still running ice cold but is it still worth getting the aircon serviced or is this a damp pollen filter issue?

Cheers

replace the filter then if the smell is still there i guess get it serviced or try and blag it at kwik fit lol

Spray some dettol into the AC filter hole, then a little bit of it onto the car (nod intake) side of the filter and install it.

Take the car out for a run and use the AC for a while, then turn it up to hot and dry the system out.

If not then it's time for a proper clean and a new filter, so you might as well get it topped up at the same time.

Have you not used it for a while?

Give it a blast, open the windows as its hot outside.

Avoid Kwik Fit.

Ive seen on other threads its because bacrteria breed in the aircon so to get rid of the smell you need to get rid of the bacteria. A service would do it, just depends if you want to pay for it I guess. Good luck

Service it......much easier.....but avoid Kwik Fit.....take it to a local independent.....

  • 4 weeks later...

My Octy aircon smells like rotten but just a few seconds after I turn aircon on. Then it disappears and does not come back until next time I turn aircon off and on again. If I turn engine off, even for a long time, and then on with aircon still on, I get no smell. I get it only by actually turning aircon off and then on again.

I was thinking about the pollen filter but (a) I got my car just serviced by dealer just before purchase and (B) I assume that a dirty and/or bacteria infested filter would smell more or less continuously, not just a few seconds after turn on.

Being very few seconds is not a big issue but during those few seconds it's very disgusting!

As I'm leaving for holidays in a couple of days, I've no time to have it checked by a dealer (provided I'd find an open dealer now!)

If there are any roadside action I can take, I'll do it when arrived at my holiday destination.

Any suggestion?

I had this problem a few weeks ago. I tried one of those aerosol canisters from Halfords that worked for 2 days then the fusty smell was back.

I tried running it on full hot and thamade no difference.

I then tried the opposite and started running it on full cold instead of 18 or 19.

This seems to have cured it ! I've had no bad smells since even when running with the blower on but no aircon.

Being the current external temp about 36-38 deg here, the "full cold" suggestion is more than welcome :whew:

If the "full hot" option was the solution, I'd been waiting to fix it until october (at least)!

Thanks Nick for the suggestion. I'll try it first thing tomorrow.

Still, it puzzles me its very strange behaviour.

I've seen some fairly good aircon cleaners mentioned (such as 1z Klima) but struggled to find them in the uk. I'd be tempted to try one on the wives Fabia as that does the same.
