DIY fitting of towbar & electrics?

Featured Replies

Hi all, was wondering how easy/hard is it to DIY fit a towbar & electrics to my 05 plate 2.5TDi & could anyone recommend a kit to do so???

Very easy indeed. The B5.5 is fully drilled with the towbar mounting points. The lighting wiring is non-multiplexed and connections are straightforward.

I bought a Passat towbar made by Bosal for about £70 on eBay - perfect fit. Remove bumper skin (rear lights have to be removed as some screws underneath) and unbolt and discard crash bar. Mounting holes are in the boot, covered in masking tape and painted body colour. Fitting is completely straightforward and the bumper does not need to be cut. I used an audible trailer flasher warning in the boot to save running wires forward.

VAG stoplamp switches are rubbish and my big trailer has 4 lamps - so I fitted a relay. Power for the trailer stoplamps is from the rear of the boot socket.

The Superb is an excellent towcar.
