Fanbelt replaced, started squealing again already!

Featured Replies

I've just had my fanbelt replaced yesterday. Today when I start my car, it squeals very briefly again before dying down in a few seconds. Also it briefly squealed (maybe 0.5 seconds) after I dropped from 5th to 2nd to overtake someone before.

I've looked at it, and it seems ok. Surely a brand new belt shouldnt squeal already? Could it just need wearing in?

Have to tried a bit of lube on it?

Surely that would make it slip more, or am I missing a point?

mmmmm methinks taking the michael :)

check your pulleys don't have sharp edges from wear???? on my old valver the P/steering belt needed adjusting nearly everytime I refueled! Turned out that the P/steering pump pulley had edges as sharp as a knife and would just cut into the belt!!! Changed it and problem stopped!

Thanks I'll check it tomorrow. :)

Yep. Ever seen anyone spray lube onto a rolling road? Slip genarates heat/friction which generates grip. Also new belts do sometime need a b i of lube just to settle down (you can get specific silicone belt dressing).

However could be loose.

Could also be unlucky and have a faulty belt (not very likely, but possible) as I had one of those. Tightened it. Few days later, loose again. Did that a few times and then basically ordered another belt and returned the faulty one.

Wouldnt think that's the case as it's fairly rare though :)
