Best Super unleaded brand for my VRS?

Featured Replies

Hello all, I was just wondering what would be the best brand of super unleaded to put in my vrs when i collect it on saturday? BP, Shell ect? My Clio sports didnt enjoy ultimate a few years back and i know some engines seem to run better on certain brands.

Ive been a derv man for years and the last time i put petrol in a car was 6 years ago and i know little of the 1.8t engine and never had a petrol turbo car before.

Many thanks.

i run mine on either tesco's super unleaded or shell try and avoid bp as not only our they a rip off i have noticed after a couple of fills that the car doesnt respond as well where as tesco's or shell to me make the car feel that bit better

Tesco super for me, whatever it's called.

Tbh though I'll put in any premium fuel except BP as I'm sure they offer 97RON as opposed to shell and tesco's 99

bp is 98,esso 97

u would be right there bp is the worst ron out of all the premium fuels but sometimes when you need fuel in my area nearest to me is bp then abit further down what used to be a shell offer the same ron but without the bp branding

Shell Vpower, plus you can collect money off points.

Day

i use normal bp shat 95

Shell Vpower Nitro all the way! Tesco stuff is ESSO I believe but it is then filled with additives to make it a higher RON, which is bad for your engine in the long run.

You can get the Spec of Tesco Fuel and ESSO, BP, Texaco, etc.

Tesco fuel comes from refineries like all fuel, but it is not ESSO fuel.

See 'Greenergy' who are the people responsible for Tesco Momentum99

Royal Dutch 'Shell' tell you nothing,

you can read the Company Reports, Refinery Locations, etc, not the Fuel Formulation or which Country it arrives from, it can be refined in the UK, it can equally arrive at depots by sea as can any fuel sold in the UK not that it matters really.

and they all get Ethenol to give the RON.

Try and find what Shell Additives are and you can not, or Tescos etc.

The cleaners/detergents are nothing special,, its not Rocket Fuel, just Petroleum.

Tesco Momentum 99, (99 ron minimum)

Maybe 5 pence a litre more than 95 ron and worth every penny.

(so around £2.50 a tank more but will maybe give an extra 20 miles a tank, so paid for its self.)

Shell V Power Nitro,

probably 5 pence more again and not worth giving Royal Dutch Shell the extra money.

(another £2.50 a tank over Tesco Momentum. but will probably only give the same performance and MPG, so an Extra £2.50 wasted)

Sainsburys Super Unleaded maybe only 98 ron minimum but good value and OK.

You get the Kidology on Additives,

& like some of us remember Shell and their special Formulations. & Failures.

Sodium Chloride, Nitrogen as an example.

I know that Tesco in Ireland get their fuel supplied by the same company that supplies Topaz -

which is/was Statoil and Shell in Ireland before they sold off their business interests over here.

theres now a topaz at each end of some 3000 population villages..

I always found tesco's stuff fine, and used shell while i was lived in Scotland a few years back.

Couple of fills of BP at the time and the car did feel rougher...

Esso over here was never any great shaes either tbh...

Thanks for the advice, theres a tesco less than a mile away so tesco 99 it is. I pick it up at some point today so i cant wait. Its first job is the family holiday to the hampshire coast so a good chance to see what its like on a run.

Random off-topic question here: is there any difference in the lifespan of the different grades ?

eg which would keep longer in a jerrycan ?

Interesting you say this!!  Exact same question came up on the Cossie forum that I belong to.  The only reply was......They will all be the same as in life span in a can.

I suppose it would depend on the exact chemical make up of the fuel, and the gae/material/condition of the jerry can as to the reactions would be like, and how well sealed it is.... I know i was told after having my car parked up for a few months to drain the tank and refill, then run some through the fuelsystem before starting it up, in case fuel had decomposed...

have always used Tesco 99 momentum in all my turbo cars after having my first Scooby track car mapped at enginetuner I found out that there was no difference between it and shell v-power.except I get the points for using Tesco to use on shopping and the best bit 10p a litre less than shell.never had any problems with it.stay well away from bp though as poor quality and your car wont like it.
