Columbus Navigation Basics

Featured Replies

Hi

I have just picked up my new car and am just getting to grips with the satnav. I asked the Columbus to plot me a route from Bristol to Sidcup Kent. On my old Tom Tom it would go M4, then off at Reading, through Bracknell, M3 then M25. Pretty smart really, avoiding congestion around Heathrow.

All 3 routes Columbus offer are the same, M4 all the way, then straight through central London? I tried switching off Toll Roads hoping it might recognise congestion charges but it keeps taking me through central London. Am I missing something here with the basic setup?

Cheers

Rich

The 3 route options  Columbus will offer are : quickest, shortest, economic routes.

Unlike the TomTom which you can keep telling to try an alternative ( but using the same route criteria) if you dont like the one offered.

I must admit I find some of the routing decisions taken by Columbus weird and seem to be due to the very low average speeds assigned to non-Motorway sections. I find the ETA always comes down dramatically as I progress along the A roads, unlike on the TomTom whose ETA hardly changed during an event free journey.

As an example on a recent trip from the NW to Stansted airport  ( at night) it really wanted to send me down to the M25 then up the M11 and approach Stansted from the south. I ignored it's persistent determination to get me on to the M6, then the M1 and took the A14 off the A1 which seemed far more obvious .

Well the signature will be correct again in a few months time.

Running on the emergency spare as I have just ruined a rear tyre by catching the sharp edge of the slate kerbing used in Borrowdale.

So I now know how to use the jack etc !

What is really annoying is that I watched another car catch the same bit of kerbing on Wed while volunteering for the NT.
