For a PD, it's important to check the label for compliance to VAG 507 (variable service) or 505 (fixed) spec.

You mean 505.01, 505.00 is no good for a PD engine.

Looking at the picture in your link, it looks like it is only suitable for Vauxhall/Opel/Saab cars.

So don't touch it with a barge pole.

^ What he said........or 507.00.

Thanks for the correction Trundlenut.

If you want to go cheap buy ASDA 5W/30 in the green tub £20 for 5 litres. It hasn't been presented to VW for approval but it is C3 so it can be used.

Just seen in local Asda their own 5W/30 in the green tub is reduced from £20 to £14 for 5L.  Does say on it suitable for VW and Skodas.  Seems a good price if it is suitable.

It does say suitable for Skodas but hasn't got the VW 505.01 approval simply because it hasn't been presented to VW. But as I said it is 5W30 C3 so it's good to go in.

You invalidate any warranty if you don't get the car serviced by a VAT registered garage anyway.

I'm all for saving a few quid where possible, but I really can't understand scrimping on oil....especially if you are doing the service yourself and saving so much on labour anyway.

I just get Quantum Longlife III and be done with it. It usually costs me about £8 more than 5 litres of the cheapest oil that 'conforms' to spec. As I change my oil annually it works out at 15p more a week for Quantum.

It's a free country, and people can do what they like......but I'm quite attached to my cam shafts, so I'll stick to Quantum.

And me, I go for the next step up I use Triple QX and it has the VW stamp of approval, im not trying to have a pi55ing contest here nor am I trying to say you should use an oil that hasn't been approved and tell a warrenty company that you did use an approved, all im saying is VW don't grade oio ACEA and the SAE do and they say ASDA's 5W30 meets C3 spec, which is the requirement.

It doesn't matter what brand name is on the container.

If it has VW 507.00 specified on the label then it is of a high enough quality for VAG engines.

As the OP's PD170 has a DPF fitted the service interval is irrelevant, it's VW 507.00 or nothing.
