Octavia mk 1 diesel downshift problems when driving a while.

Featured Replies

Hi I am finding it hard to downshift when been driving a while and it gets worse after driving for a long time. My clutch bites really low aswell. I was wondering if this is a gearbox oil change issue or a clutch hydraulics issue or gear linkage adjustment issue. Does anyone have any idea's on this. The only time it seems ok is for the first few miles. If it's a bleeding issue could anyone give me any tips.

Best regards.

James.

What it is like changing gear without the engine running?

I would say it is worth changing the gearbox oil regardless.  Use the proper VW stuff though.

You may have 3 problems. Check that the linkage is set up correctly & change the gearbox fluid genuine VAG only. Clutch slave cylinder seal is notorious for failing when bled, my advice is to fit a new one.

Changing gear with engine off is okay. I will change the oil with the stuff from my main dealers.

Where could I find the bleed nipple on this car where is the slave?

It is the right hand side of the engine as you into it, on top of the gearbox pointing upwards. It should have a plastic cover on it

If you are going to attempt bleeding the slave cylinder I strongly advise you to have a new one on hand in case the seal pops., which will leave you with no pedal. :wall:  If you're lucky you may not need the new one & can return it to the supplier.

I have never bled one like this. the last one I did was a landrover discovery 200tdi. Do you pump the pedal keep it depressed and open the screw and lock it back up again before releasing the pedal? How easy is it to replace the slave if needed to do it? Thanks for the reply this is really doing my head in.

Eezibleed is a must. Pumping the pedal will screw the seal for sure.
