the starter on my 03 octavia vrs is giving a bit of bother, im goin to replace it and i wondered if it was unique to the vrs or is there anything else from the octavia or other VAG stable that will fit,  thanks,

The 1 in the mk4 golf 1.8t and Audi a3 1.8t is the same. My starter went in my vrs octavia and i put my 1.8t golf 1 in to make sure it wos the starter that wos at fault.

Just make sure that it is not an anni or 6 speed golf donor. The scrappy gave me 1 from an AUQ engined anniversary but it wouldn't fit because it was an 02M gearbox. The gearbox in the VRS is 02J

 

Which reminds me, if anybody wants an 02M starter off an anniversary golf they can have it for the postage, fecking breakers wouldn't take it back.

forgot about the 6 speed 1.8t. Yeah they don't fit as stated. Lol

cheers folks, the common diesel one is different then?   looks like ill have to source a new one.. 

I bought a new 1 from a local motor factors. Wos like £94 quid and exchange my old 1

got a used one from a VW/audi breakers, fitted it today.. €40  job done..  

While your down there it would also be worth cleaning battery leads up, especially the earth leads on gearbox and under battery tray
