Adjustments on Spax shocks?

Featured Replies

Hi

I am in the process of fitting some Spax shocks onto my Spitfire. They are adjustable for height and rate. Thing is, they came with no instructions, so if anyone can help I have some questions.

Is it possible to adjust for height while mounted on the car, and if so how because the plate onto which the sprint sits covers the big nut.

Will the car sit lower when the lower spring plate is at its lowest setting?

To adjust the rate, which way do you turn the adjustment screw for soft and hard?

Any advice will be great.

Thanks

Martin

Can you post a picture of the suspension, will be easier to explain with it.

That did cross my mind, but I have left my digital camera at work.

Generally winding an adjust clockwise will make the damper harder. Its easy enough to tell.

Spring height is altered by spinning the platform up and down the thread. Some will have two platforms that are locked together others have a grub screw to stop it moving when at the desired height. Should be able to adjust them on car using C-spanners.

They have two nuts which screw up and down the thread, and lock together to hold the platform for the base of the spring. I have a C-spanner, but only the lower nut can be screwed with this, as the base for the sriing covers the nut preventing acces to it with the C-Spanner.

Does this make sense?

The smaller 'nut' should be underneath the larger 'nut' so the spring shouldnt stop you getting to it.

Not quite, those pictures show the lower nut not to be as broad. The adjustment nuts on the Spax I have are the same in that respect. The upper nut is thinner, and has a small sleeve going upwards. Because it is thinner the lower plate covers the recesses into which the C-spanner would locate. The lower locking nut is thicker, with no sleeve.

I'll see if I can borrow a camera as it will make things cleaer.

Thanks

That would be usefull...lol

Here are some pictures. I borrowed a camera which doesn't seem able to focus on images close up (it was only

What a crap idea that is, well done Spax.

Might be worth sending them an email to confirm this.

Going to call them tomorrow anyway. I was beginning to think I was thick.

Cheers!

Spax got back to me quite promptly today, after sending them a fax this morning.

The base plate does cover the adjustment nut, so it does make it difficult to adjust the height when fitted to the car.

My fault for having a Spitfire which has this shape of spring base plate apparently. Oh well.

Thanks for the advice Lummox.
