An odd bit of bodywork

Featured Replies

On Golfs,Rapids etc there is a sort of squared off bit of bodywork--low down at the front.  It is the first thing that gets whacked into a high kerb in a car park.  Is that what it is for?  Or is it something to do with airflow?

Or does it help the car balance if you stack them on end to save space?

Or is it just "styling"

Anyone know please.  Just very curious.
