Car wash - choosing the best from two options

Featured Replies

Hello.

Due to restrictions in my local area it's not possible for me to wash my car at the house. One of the local gas stations has a "do it yourself" high preassure manual car wash. It runs on some sort of timer function (haven't really looked into it that much). Also, the gas station has a "normal" automatic car wash.

So, choosing from the two options above which is the way to go? Either way, I'll give the car some polist and wax afterwards.

I'd go with the high pressure washer, but keep the spray close to parallel to the body panels.

Also, if it's like UK ones, you may get an option for foaming the car before using the HP spray. If so, take it, because the foam softens the dirt so it comes off easier.

Use the 'do it yourself' one, but take a few things with you like a wash mitt, a large bottle of water (filled from home) and bucket, a wheel brush and wheel cleaner.

Then using quiet periods of the day or week, pop round, pressure rinse the car, use the foam lance if one to put foam over the car, spray wheel cleaner onto wheels, using the wash mitt and bottled water into the bucket use the mitt to wipe the foam and bucket to rinse the mitt and continue, now use the wheel brush to agitate the wheel cleaner that has been dwelling, then pressure wash off.

The benefits of this are you've reduced the swirling and marring by not using the brush on the washer and wiped any possible stone in it, all over your car, you've got your wheels clean as even the brush on the machine never did these ares properly and you feel better for having done the car in the best possible way. Then you can either drive home and leave her like that or back her out of the wash area and towel dry her and maybe put a little quick detailer or wax on her.

Agree with Ken there, go for a manual jet wash type affair. If you could take your own sponge/wash mitt then that would help too and avoid using their brush which could be full of grit and contaiminates.

Cheers guys :-) Thank you for your advise. There's both running water and water mixed with soap there, so should do fine. I think it's possible to foam the car there so I'll go for that. And bring all my supplies along for the rest of the job :-)
