I've had BT Infinity for a year or two and it's been great along with the service I've received from BT. Recently our wifi kept dropping so BT furnished us with a new hub. ThePC and iPad running on wifi were fine but the main PC whether on wifi or Ethernet was giving between 3 and 5 Mbps - it was like going back in time. Contacted BT and they were monitoring our line.

Last night I got fed up and about 11pm I reset the PC to a date about a week ago. Bingo, we were up to 56mbps last night and 46 this morning.

I hadn't changed any PC settings and all the Norton stuff is up to date and running.

Anyone with any ideas?

I have Bt infinity and yes sometimes it does drop but not very often, when it does i just reset the black box and all fine again.

How often do you reboot the PC?? Maybe the reboot allowed the connection between the PC and the box to reset, rather than changing the time, or an issue with the PC to clear.

 

I have had several instances where internet connection has gone down on my PC, but was perfect on SWMBOs next door, a hard reboot and I was connected again.

Did you just change the time & date on the PC, or did you do a system restore to a week ago? The wording isn't clear.

 

If you've only changed the time & date that shouldn't have done anything to your PC to alter it's networking performance. First thing I'd advise is to check your ethernet cable, if one of the wires is loose or making a bad connection it could upset things meaning it can't run in full duplex mode and would automatically 'negotiate' half-duplex 10Mbps with your router/switch.

I probably don't reboot the PC often, we leave it go into "sleep" mode. I did a "reset" on the PC to revert to previous settings, I did not change the date or clock.

Could have been malware then potentially. Or seriously broken settings inside windows (ethernet link mode set to 10Mbps etc).

 

If it happens again and you're on ethernet, look at the back of the PC, normally by the ethernet connector there will be LEDs next to the two or three link speeds, 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps. If 100 or 1000 is lit up then the chances are you need to get hold of a better virus/malware scanner.

 

If it's possible, you could also connect a secondary PC/laptop with Ethernet as well, and just try copying a large file between the two, you should be able to get at least 7-8 megabytes/sec by doing that (you'll never get the full line rate because of protocol overhead).

I bet this were the issue. I bet somehow the duplex were changed on your network adapter. Reverting back would of then put it back to 100 full which is what the average home router negotiates at.

 

Either that or yea it just needed a reboot.
