Won't start after timing belt change.

Featured Replies

Ok changed the timing belt on my 2004 vRS. Followed skudmissile a guide. Before putting back together I rotated the engine a few times to and reinserted locking tools. All spot on.

Put it all back together but won't stat just turns overs. Checked he fuel pipes (put new filter on) and all appears fine.

Just cranks over but won't start. The car has sat for a about 4 weeks.

Any ideas?

You need to slacken off the 3 bolts on the camshaft sprocket just enough, then adjust slightly by turning 1' at a time, you have either got it set too retarded or too advanced, just play with it until you get it started.

Just done both of mine.

Cheers. Just plugged VCDS in and getting the 19464 camshaft position sensor out of range.

So I just gave to tweak the cam sprocket? No need to strip it? Hope not lol.

Hello mate.  Take the cam cover off and look at the toothed window on the cam sproket.  The marker hole should be roughly in the center of the toothed window.  If it is off to one side with no adjustment room for the 3 13mm bolts it may be a tooth out.  Also where is the belt tentioner arrow pointing on the cut out?.

I'm still thinking fuel filter a lifttle. If you don't fill the new filter they are a pain in the arss to start!

Yeah tensioner is on the cut out. Locking pin on the cam sprocket looked to be in the middle so at least I have plenty of room for adjustment.

Yeah fitted new filter without filling it up first so was expecting a couple if turns without started as in the past when I've changed it.

Will tweak the cam sprocket tonight.

Self priming on the vrs though aren't they?

Takes ages to get it started after a fuel filter change. I was told need to turn ignition on about 10 times to prime/fill filter, it was more like 20-30.

All sorted :)

At first rotated cam sprocket to the left but no difference. Rotated all the way to the right and it started :) checked VCDS and it was -7 degrees out. So for tweaks and got it back to 0.

Thanks for all your help. No bent valves :)

Glad to hear you sorted it :)

With the 3 bolts loosened, the camshaft sprocket should be rotated fully clockwise in the slots. This puts the the sprocket within one tooth of the correct setting and ensures that the engine will run.

You got there in the end :)
