Brand new front suspension knocking on both sides

Featured Replies

I got the AP 25mm suspension kit fitted today and both sides of the fronts seem to be knocking, even when the car rolling on a completely flat smooth road it knocks

Any idea what it could be??

The guy at the garage said the shocks are slightly smaller then the originals so the top bit is loose on both sides (the parts under the bonnet which have a grommet thing on top that you have to remove to get to)

He said they are slightly thinner so can't be held in there properly so there is a little play which is what the knocking noise is

The circled bits are where it's loose at the top and there's a bit of play which they said is causing the knocking

Looking at older threads on here, i'm guessing what i circled in the picture are the top mounts??

Correct. Sounds like he's not assembled them properly.

I removed those caps under the bonnet and my mate basically shaked the car and both sides are loose and there is a lot of movement

Any idea on what needs to be done to fix this??

I'm going back to the garage tomorrow anyway as Euro Car Parts gave me the wrong fuel filter so wasn't able to get that changed today

Where was the movement? The piston of the shock or the top mount itself?

The piston of the shock is basically loose inside, nothing wrong with the top mount as far as i can see from the top

Sounds like they've not tightened the top nut up properly. I'd be wary about letting them work on the car. A garage that lets a car go in a worse state that what it went in is a big no no for me.

Thanks for the help mate, i'm going back tomorrow and won't be paying a penny over what i owe him for today's work.

At least it isn't anything seriously wrong, i was hoping i wouldn't have to live with the knocking lol

Wow. Its situation like these that I realise that doing your own servicing isn't JUST about saving a few quid......

You are taking it back to the same idiots that already bluffed you ? Bonkers. I'd only be any more suprised if you used them again in future too.

The service was fine, only problem with that is the fuel filter was the wrong one so I'm taking it back to Euro to get it swapped this morning, I ordered it myself and it was the correct one so someone must have picked up the wrong one off the shelf

I'm going back there today because I hold them responsible and want them to complete the job on the suspension, it doesn't sound that serious but we'll see

The garage is quite good usually, they just seen to have new mechanics working there every time I go there so you never get to work out who will do a good job on your car.

It was the front left anti roll bar link, the holes in the new shocks were slightly bigger so there was a little play, ordered new ones and just waiting for them to arrive now

Fitted new drop links and it is fixed! :)

How does the car ride with the new set-up? I was planning on the same as you've done next payday.

Much better then standard, I'm glad I didn't go for coilovers

the ride is just perfect, it's not bouncy either as it usually is when lowering, but I think it's only like that when you lower on springs on there own
