gearbox issue

Featured Replies

driving home from work today noticed an oily smell inside car when i got home had quick snoop about it seems like its leaking transmission fluid where the box bolts on to engine im 90% sure its not engine oil deffo does not smell like engine oil like i say leaking from exact place where box bolts on engine its also sprayed the oil right back underneath car but while parked up it just drops out little drops v.slowly anyone any ideas if any seals or such like may of failed? thanks in advance

Is it an auto? If not it sounds like the gearbox is coming out by the clutch which would be bad.

its 5 speed manual mk1 octy vrs also just noticed streak of oil all the way up the avenue to my drive! not looking good! would i be able to drive car a couple of miles say to garage? its still drives and still seems to be going into gear ok?

I suppose it depends if it contaminates the clutch. Also the capacity of the gearbox is only about 1.5 litres and I doubt you get very far with no oil in the gearbox but it seizes up.

If it is gearbox oil, the most likely cause is a failed input shaft seal.

If its coming from the bell housing its either gearbox oil from the spigot shaft seal or engine oil from the rear crank seal. You'll smell it if its gear oil.

It sounds like you're losing a lot, don't drive it until its fixed

When my gearbox did that, I got approx 2.5 miles before this happened:

cheers for that guys had my mechanic look at it thismorning he says diff has gone through bell housing catastophic fail!! lucky that my mate ( also mk1 vrs owner) has got a spare box already out of car £100 v.reasonable i thought so getting fitted next week. can anyone reccomend if there is anything else i should change for new parts while i have the oppertunity when box is out? seals etc. thanks again for all replies! cheers!

Clutch plate, and check the DMF for wear.

Oh yeah and how about some graveyard pics?

I would put a G60 flywheel and vr6 clutch in whilst it's out (it's cheap and you won't have to pay to replace the dmf and the clutch at a later date), and you could do the output shaft seals on the box too.
