Oily smell in car

Featured Replies

Hi all

Noticed over the past couple of weeks there's a slightly oily smell in the car. Just wondered if anyone had any ideas what it coiukd be?

Thanks.

Any visible leaks under the bonnet??

No idea what it could be, but is it like a burning oil smell or more like exhaust fumes??

I can't see any leaks but haven't been under yet to check it.

My dad thinks its an oily smell but the wife thinks its more like exhaust fumes. Lol.

I mean underneath the car. No leaks visible from under bonnet.

A thorough visual check is the first thing to do + if there's any doubt it would also be worth checking for any leakage from the exhaust system, from the manifold back. I'm not exactly sure what model you've got but may also be worth checking any breather pipes around the top end of the engine just in case there's any blockage?

I actually had oil in the car but in my case and as strange as it sounds it was transmission oil travelling back up the speedo cable and depositing back into the cab & all due to a blocked vent! Gearbox oil really isn't something you want in the cab with you, :giggle: .

Check the crank case breather pipe under the engine cover.

I've checked the breather pipe to the air intake.

Will get it up on the ramps Monday and check the exhaust.

Its the 1.4 mpi

Snap & can't say we've ever experienced the like over the course of the last 4 years.

Ideally you should be able to differentiate between an oil or exhaust odour, but may be tricky if there happens to be more oil in combustion. Another aspect to check is the seals around doors/windows/tailgate as gases can be drawn back in! Good luck.

The MPi engine can leak oil from the camcover or the corner of the head which can run down behind the exhaust manifold heatshield and burn on the hot manifold, you'd be able to smell these fumes inside the car.

A point well made. Ours has leaked oil from the rocker cover for some time now but doesn't appear to have resulted in that burning off smell. Although perhaps it's just the case that it's not venting back into the car?

Blast engine whilst still running at a jet wash. Be careful not to direct the jet directly at the alternator or coils etc to get rid of oil residue ans that should sort out the smell.
