I'm afraid........

..........of overtightening my safety wheel bolts.   Can you do any damage to alloy wheels by over-tightening them?

I know they need 120 n/m and when I can get at my torque wrench they will get them. Until then I'm going to use the " small stamp with the right foot on the brace,  to produce, just once, a small squeak method"     Over a life time of steel wheels this has been a stand by. when the torque wrench is missing.

But I have zero experience of alloys.  And thats a worry, .

Any advice would by gratefully received

Hmm, Im not a particularly strong bloke, but when I got a torque wrench I found 120nm was a lot less than I thought it was and I can easily get it just by hand. I'd never stamp on it. Infact, I only try and apply smooth pressure, even when removing them as I don't want a sudden jolt to end in a crack.

indeed, 120nm is about "strong hand" tight!

.............always "one tight not too tight"........

Buy a torque wrench.

Stupid bar they give you from factory is rubbish and easily shear bolts/heads.

a 'good hand' tight, then turn up a little more if needed after 50-80 miles.

Yes, I was surprised how loose the wheel bolts were on my brand new Citigo when I had the bad luck of getting a puncture after two days of use.  I am now getting a torque wrench.

@AdLav     Did you read the sentence "I know they need 120 n/m and when I can get at my torque wrench they will get them"

Until then I will check the tightness by "firm hand" every couple of days. That should do it.

Yes I did, thanks for asking.

Why worry about it if its not been a problem when you bought the car? Trust is the bottom line.

Why would the tightness of a wheel bolt be a problem to anyone when they buy a car??????????????

You tell me - you're the one getting in a huff about it lol

Go back to Skoda and ask them to check the bolts or any tyre place will torque them up, you'll sleep better I'm sure I'm right.

You're obviously having trouble following this so good-night.

HopeImRight,

simple mechanics: if you have 1 meter wrench you must push (on the end) with approx. 12 kgs to apply 120 Nm of torque. So, if you have 30 cm wrench in your boot tighten the bolts with approx. 40 kgs to apply 120 Nm torque. You can "add" a few kgs (10%) for your own safety without damaging a wheel or a bolt/nut. But in any case do not jump on the wrench with a leg because you can easily exceed a torque on wheels and bolts for 100 % and you can damage them.
