DPF and limp mode

Recommended Posts

Just had a cambelt change, minor service and brake fluid by Skoda.

Drove the 2 miles home and up popped the DPF light.

Took it out a short time later to give it a run and got a 1/4 mile before I got a flashing glowplug light which I guess is limp mode.

Too late to contact the dealer today. I'm not familiar with cambelt process, Is this likely just coincidence or could it be something missed during reassemble?

If it is unrelated, what are my options? I know a new dpf is quite expensive. I'm not averse to having it removed but not sure how this will affect it's next MOT.

Really don't want any more big bills as I've spent over £1000 in the last few weeks.

Thanks

There is something amiss here.

The DPF light coming on is one thing, limp home mode a few minutes later is another.

This isn't normal as you get at least a few days / hundred miles to follow the regen process before limp home mode.

The dealer has done something - but beware, they are unlikely to admit it.

Be firm but fair, the car was fine when it went in, you've just paid them the neck end of £500 and now it's broken.

Sadly a big fault and unrelated to the work Skoda did yesterday.

Skoda are telling me the EGR cooler required replacement (£726) this will include a DPF regen but may not clear the DPF fault if the regen does not work. If it did need a new DPF I'd rather spend the money on removal.

I got in contact with Johnny at JJB who are affiliated with shark. They can do the cooler work for £550, again this may not rectify the possible DPF issue.

JJB could at additional cost do a DPF removal. This would prevent future DPF issues but again a substantial cost (albeit discounted).

And the DPF has had it too.  :(  Opting for removal.

Been a very expensive month

insurance 265

Mot fail 65

2nd Mot 230

windscreen 190

Cambelt, brakes & oil 500

EGR cooler 550

DPF 500

I don't even want to add it up! I hope the work it having done sorts it as thats a lot on money to spend on a 6yr old 80k car.

Wait a sec...

The EGR cooler fails two miles up the road from the dealer completing fairly significant engine bay work?

The DPF fails at exactly the same time as the EGR cooler?

Something smells funny here.

Oh Jesus, I've just realised your are the same guy that started the 'oil change' thread?

So DM Keith in York are the ones claiming the EGR cooler and DPF are dead?

100% you need a second opinion.

Get it to VAG specialists Roger Holmes on James Street ASAP.

Hi,

It's gone to JJB also on James St. They did their own diagnosis and came up with the same result. 2 reasons I went there, 1, i've had recommendations and 2, they are affiliated with Shark who have done previous remap work.

Had to make a fairly quick decision and hoping it was the right one.

I wish it was something that Skoda could have rectified free but it seems coincidence that this has come up same time.

I am aware that tinkering with an engine can make apparent faults which were previously borderline suddenly appear.

Hoping it will be fixed today.

Well JJB + Shark did what they said they would, great service from them. Car seems to be running great, just as it did before.

Had a new cooler fitted. Had a DPF removal and an updated map to keep the existing stage 1 but reflect the filter removal.

I did give Shark a call subsequently just to check their thoughts on EGR removal/blanking/delete and they seemed quite firm on keeping it in place and maintaining it as necessary.

Thanks for all the advice.
