lack of oomph!

Featured Replies

Hi!

My Fabia has lost all it's pull..the turbo lag has increased by the week.

I've got no boost leaks and everything is as it should be it's just nowhere near as quick as before. I would say it's become slow like the throttle is 'spongey' and if you put your foot down you don't get the power delivery just a bit of a struggle.

Can anyone guide me where to start?

Seems to be the best place to start is the maf on these engines. Unplug it and go for a drive see if it makes a difference, if so a new genuine item to replace it will fix it.

Would that put the light on the dash?

Unplugging the maf? Yes.

I've unplugged it..started the engine..revved it...seemed the same. Already have light on the dash from egr delete. I'll drive it in the morning but I've got hopes it's the maf just from the fact unplugging it hasn't made any difference even to the revs.

What does it sound like? (Opposed to normal)

Was it revving different to normal when in nuetral aswell then? Only real way of telling is driving it properly.

My guess, Wiring loom - a wiggle of the wires to all injectors may solve the issue ;)

Right I've driven it properly and there is a lot of difference so I don't think it's the maf. What else could I check? Could it be my turbo lagging more due to sticking vanes? I've done the Mr muscle treatment a few times and the car felt the same.

There is or isnt alot of difference? ????

Here's a few things I found out on a tdi forum to diagnose weather it's the maf

1. If you have cruise control set it at a speed and go up a hill with it set, if it struggles to stick to the same speed your maf is gone or on it's way out.

2. In neutral, take the revs right round to the redline (not sure what it is on the fabia someone help me out) , if it doesn't reach the redline also your maf is probably faulty.

Found this on this website here,

Also my dads tuner said that if the maf isn't properly secured, and wobbles about this can damage it very easily as they are so delicate. Don't know if your still using the airbox with the cone filter joe but I made a little bracket that come off one of the bolts on the Strut top and bolts into the screw holes on these sensor to make sure mine it solid.

There IS a lot of difference. The car is noticeably slow when disconnected..could it be the maf is on its way out anyway I wonder?

Normally it will work better with the maf unplugged if its whats causing the issues.

Tom i have no issues with my maf at the moment as it doesnt move much how the filter is wedged behind the battery. It will be getting a maf delete when remapped anyway.

Good man, my plans also !

When mine was feeling less gutsy, the chaps here advised resetting the ECU. (Turn off all electrics, disconnect battery, leave for 30mins, reconnect battery, idle engine for another 30 without touching any of the pedals).

Worked like a charm. Honestly, not a placebo effect...made a noticeable difference on the motorways.

Right I did the battery disconnection & I have to say it makes a lot of difference!

The car feels much more lively and back to normal.

I wonder though what values the ecu had learnt that made it feel sluggish and how I could prevent it from happening again ?

Might try this on mine as my old mans fabia vrs feels a lot quicker than mine and they are both standard. I'm guessing I wont get any dash lights come on or have to put anything like a code back into the radio because I'm disconnecting the battery for 30 mins will I? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'd rather ask than have problems later lol

I definitely recommend this!

I left mine off over night and the symphony radio code is stored on the ecu and you won't get any dash lights.

Thanks jamwatn, will give this a go on my day off this week and will let you know how I get on :)

Just to update. I did the disconnect 30 idle 30 procedure yesterday and it has definitely made a difference. The previous owner was a woman driver and I can only think she never drove the car to it's full potential because it picks up and pulls better than before and doesn't feel as sluggish. Gonna get some Wynns EGR cleaner next, and clean that through. The car is having a service next month so will be having everything checked over then.

Just an update...I think this fix is only temporary as the car feels fairly sluggish again.:s any ideas?

Get vag com on it with someone who knows how to use it will be your best bet.
