Superb II 1.8TSi - Engine Timing?

Featured Replies

Hi there, Im currently looking at potentialy purchasing a 2009 (Janurary) Superb II. Its got the 1.8Tsi engine in it.

Am i right in saying this has a Cam/Timing Chain and not a Belt ?

I've currently a '02 MkI Octavia vRS and i know the 1.8T on that is a belt timed unit, i was under the impression the Tsi was just a slightly updated unit to the old 1.8T in my Octavia & hence had a timing belt but ive read conflicting reports online...

If the 1.8Tsi in the Supurb is a chain, what is the service interval like ?  The car currently has just over 55,000miles on it...I would think a belt at this stage of its life - time & milage wise may need to be looked at soon, but if its a chain i havnt a clue as to what it may need in terms of service...Any ideas anyone?

Any other info/advice on what to look at in a Superb II 1.8Tsi is welcome...i'll miss my Octavia but i think its time for an upgrade

Cheers,

AL

The 1.8 turbo is a FANTASTIC engine.  It has a chain-cam so no need for particular attention other than routine servicing.

If you're really fussy, you'll need to check whether your car is on fixed or variable servicing.  To me, it makes sod-all difference; I simply re-set it in both the maxidot and VCDS and run my own sensible routine: every 20,000 miles for a major service, with a half-service in between for that all-important oil change.  If I was still in warranty I might think differently, but I'm not going to pay for mainly superfluous work.

Spark plugs and air-filter are due at 60,000 miles.  Put a K&N filter in for better breathing.

You will not regret buying this car.  That particular engine has a LOT of fans on this site.

Thanks Ned....that's good to hear...save a few bob on a cam belt change so ! It's got a full service history on a fixed schedule, well, at least that is what has been done so far, once a year / 10,000mile or so for the usual Oil change etc...like yourself ill be sticking to a similar routine....

Thats put my mind to rest so...just wanted some definate confirmation before the bargining on the price begins !

From what it looks, the 1.8 petrols are more reliable than the 1.6 & 2.0 diesels, they have the egr,DPF problems, but the petrols are looking much better off

True that...i've read alot of alot of people having DPF issues...but then alot of those are down to how the car is been driven & knowing how the DPF system works......I wouldnt be doing massive milage a year to warrent a diesel anyway (Less than 8K miles a year) so i wasnt really thinking of going down the Diesel route....unless the price was very right !
