Fab - Recent Loss of MPG?

Featured Replies

We've had an 02 1.4mpi Classic for around 4 years & on the whole it's always given a fairly decent return on fuel. However I suspect in the last couple of months the mpg has dropped away with no change in driving style and servicing applied as specified.

So rather than dive into checking everything I thought I'd call on the good folk of Brisky to offer your advice/experience on the most likely causes relating to this model/engine!?

Thanks all.

I'm no expert on mechanical issues but ......casting my mind back to what I have previously read in similar threads and in no particular order........

have consumables like air filter and spark plugs been replaced at recommended intervals

does car get up to operating temperature fairly quickly ......if it doesn't could point to th'stat or sensor faults

are tyre pressures at recommended settings

could brakes be binding

......these suggestions are just off the top of my head and hopefully people who really know what they are talking about will come in with better advice.

PS: do you actually know by brim full to brim full refueling that mpg has gone down or is it just a gut feeling ?

Gave my mpi an oil change and got it back up to about 43mpg from 39/40 mpg.

^ Thanks for this feedback guys. To update yes pretty much all the servicing items are up to date & oil is always changed on the 10k mark. I know seasonal changes can make a difference but in this case it's more relating to the late spring/summer period, so no summer/winter comparison.

Actually quantifying it is a point well made & perhaps that's something I should now do as gut feeling alone isn't really enough to go on! Any other feedback/ideas will be gratefully received, cheers.
