Looking to buy a Fabia vrs but need some guidance

Featured Replies

Hi there im new to the forum and wishing to purchase the new fabia vrs tsi.

Let me say first im really impressed with the car it ticks all the boxes for me, fast, economical, practical, rare and the insurance is very cheap for me.

I want to buy this car.

But ive been put of at the alarming number of posts regarding oil consumption causing engine replacements.

I apologize if these questions have been asked before but im looking for what im hoping some reassurance.

Are these problems occuring down to improper maintance of the car while the cars engine is beading in? Or are these problems related to tuning ie remaps? Im looking to spend about 10k on one with about 15-30k on the clock most are 60 regs.

Are any of these cars safe? If so from what reg and what engine code?

Thank you for your help :)

Welcome to the forum.

The cars are in the main, actually the majority, perfectly fine.

1.4 TSI CAVE engine June 2010- Aug 2012 or so,

1.4 TSI CTHE engine Aug 2012- now.

Anyone of the engines could use oil,

but if you get one with some warranty left,  ie not yet 3 years old, then Skoda will need to get it right if it did use Oil

beyond their acceptable usage.

Standard cars that are used normally and maintained properly can have problems,

but these are not that common from the over 2000 cars in the UK.

Best just drive the car, see if you like,

& take out a 2 Year extended Warranty with Skoda for £547 when the Original Warranty Expires.

Hi Timbo,

I bought mine without doing any of the sensible research you are doing right now. It seems from my reading, and I did a lot after joining Briskoda, that noone can say exactly why some cars have suffered the oil issue. Personally I believe a forums will always distort the negative because people will come looking for answers and a place to vent when things go wrong whereas I am sure a good number of vRS' are being run by people who aren't car enthusiastic enough to join the forum.

You are in a great position for many reasons though; you should be able to get a bargain little performance car easily within budget given the price range you are looking at and more importantly armed with some knowledge you should be able to pick out an example where someone else has done all the fault testing and diagnosing for you.

My suggestions would be to look for a single owner car which has covered 25k+ as you would expect any oil issues were seen in it's early life. If it had issues there should be a skoda uk record of what if any warranty work was carried out and if someone kept it for three years and 25-30k there is a good chance it's running spot on.

My car is a '10 plate with now approaching 39k on the clock, when I called Skoda UK the only warranty work performed on the car since birth was that which I had requested to fix a dash squeak - resolved.

I feel very confident in my car and am also getting to enjoy some light modding without warranty concerns (as I don't have one). '60 reg's will have some warranty left but my advice is do all the work you can to pick out a car that ideally won't require any warranty work.

On engine codes CAVE were the early engines and CTHE the later ones, given the year you are looking at this would be a CAVE, both engines have reported issues, slightly more prevalence with CAVE.

.......as seen in other threads, George types faster than me

The only thing to say is that the CAVE engine did run for 2 years, 24 months, before the revised engine and MAP was released,

and some are obviously 37 months old.

and the CTHE engine has only been in cars for 12 months.

There are less reports of CTHE engines with high oil usage in the past 12 months than the CAVE had from 2010-2011, then 2011-2012.

(but only time tells how they go as there are more miles put on these engines over the next 12 months.)

I recently bought a VRS. So far (fingers crossed) I've not had any problems with it whatsoever. I've accepted the fact that I will need to regularly check and potentially regularly top up the oil as part of the VRS ownership (The sales chap told me it was using a litre roughly every 3000 miles although I don't know how he could really know that)... but what I thought you may be interested in is that I have 62 plate with 15k miles on the clock and it was around your budget. £10.5k to be honest. I liked the fact that it's covered 15k miles, not too few for any underlying problems to emerge on me but not too many either. The bonus being it still has 1.5 years warranty left.

Happy hunting, I'm loving my Fabia VRS! I think you may as well.

You need to remember that the vast majority have good engines. Also don't get hung up on expecting zero oil use, some usage is not a problem.

With cars that use lots of oil and have had engine problems there is no consensus as to why,you either have a bad engine or a good one. However the car has a quite high engine powerfor its size and so personally I would avoid one tuned further.

Ideally you need to know the history of the car and it may be difficult to obtain this and find out if it has any oil burning history,so getting a comprehensive warranty with the car becomes very important and the cars you are looking at will be about out of Skoda warranty.

It's thought that the later engines,CTHE code, are better, but these were not introduced until late 2012.

All in all with a 3 year old one I'd probably use a Skoda dealer only, ask for their history on the car and make sure you get a good used warranty.Buying from a car supermarket or other dealer who may have sourced the vehicle from auction will be risky.
