My Y-reg TDI estate has a gearbox whine in 4th gear @ ~ 40 mph - feathered throttle. Goes away on full over-run or under load and not there in 5th.

Any ideas - guys - please?

Where is the g/b oil level plug? Is it obvious?

How many miles have you covered? Never experienced any whine with mine over 80+k miles

It's been doing it for a year or more but now seems a bit louder

Just to add the gear change is fine hot or cold. The whine is louder when very hot.
