Speeding ticket abroad

Featured Replies

Hi all, just need a bit of advice, my daughter went to Australia in August but she as today received a speeding ticket in the post. Does she have to pay this, and will she receive points on her UK driving licence???

Thanks in advance

No points go on your UK license. In theory you should declare the offence to your insurance company.

Pay the fine. If you don't, they will treat it as unpaid and they may choose to escalate it. Either way, you may have problems visiting Australia (and some other countries in the region).

Some countries try to recover fines in the UK, but in reality they can't force you to pay and can't take legal action against you here in the UK.

Is it genuine or is it a scam? Did your daughter really get caught for speeding and where did they get her details? Was it a hire car - in which case I think its normal for them just to charge it to your credit card (email them and check)

The UK embassy for any country a ticket is being claimed can verify their validity.

If indeed valid and you hope to goto the country again it may be worth paying.

As above if a hire car generally the hire car firm will simply bill your card

I had a friend in a similar situation. You could ignore it, and I'm sure they won't do anything, but if you want to come back into the country at any time, it could be held against you. You might want to pay it to clear your conscience as well. :)

Some countries are already exchanging such information and who knows if that will be expanded.

I have a mate who had problems entering Thailand after leaving a speeding ticket in New Zealand unpaid.
