Mounting the amp in the boot

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I'm on the final stages of installing my Empeg in the car (see here). Took a lot of the inside of the car apart over the weekend and now have my cables for the amp running down from where the headunit lives, along the centre console past the gearstick and handbrake, under the carpet and currently curled up under the back seat - Highly recommended route! Lots of space to play with, no cables squeezed (apart from under the carpet, natch) and very easy to do. There is a rather large box of tricks which is my Tuner and is now at home in the hidden part of the glovebox (under the glovebox floor) and wired through a hole I made in the side. Quite proud of it so far :)

Anyway, all I have to do now is mount the amp in the boot. Its a JVC Digifine 4x40W RMS thing and going to power the standard speakers (for now at least). It needs to go in such a way so I don't lose boot space as I use the boot every day. I also still need to be able to fold the seats to get my bike in there. On the right-hand side wheelarch would be a fine place to put it - but how do I mount it there? Do I just drill some holes into the metalwork? Isn't the diesel cap right behind there

Mounted to the back of one of the seats is another option, and if I leave enough slack in the cables, hopefully it will still fold OK though there is more potential for luggage damage this way. This would mean drilling into the seat back - don't particulary like that idea too much. Has anyone done this? Is it secure?

False floor is very much a last resort - it is a lot of work just to hide one amp; and then there is all the associated spare wheel access and amp ventilation things to thing about.

Argh! A little help svp.

Any room under the boot floor in the Fabia? Mine is under the floor by the spare wheel in an Octy.

I did have a brief look as that would be pretty much ideal - but there is no space there. The amp is a bit of a fatty. Thanks anyway.

Back of the seat is easy enough , and like you say , if you put some slack in the cables you can still fold it down if you need to.

If I drill into the hump in the boot on the drivers side; what is under there? Is it just the wheelarch? How thick is the metal?

Be careful about sealing it or you'll have rust problems later on

False floor for me is two sheets of melamine coated kitchen unit shelving left over from a kitchen install, 4 lengths of 2 x 2 timber to create a pair of 4" deep joists... Et voila! A false floor that even the fattest amp can sit under.

Please don't go hacking about in the boot floorpan metal.

Yeah, the floor was tempting, I sized up an unused IKEA wardrobe shelf, but it wasn't to be. For safety and my sanity, I went with the back of a seat. 10 minutes and 4 8x3/4" screws later...

Job done. Very secure too.

In fact, I wired it up, sorted out some more cabling (Earthed to a seatbelt nut), put my Empeg in and fired her up. It sounds really great! Will post more pics tomorrow when its not pitch black outside.

A good alternative!

Can't wait to get my ICE all back in, especially the new amplifier.

I pretty much had the same thing done in mine. The only thing that worries me is the heat inside the boot...if you guys have ever noticed after being in the sun, or not even, when you open the boot and stick your head in it IS pretty hot in there. I'm trying to figure out a way to get some ventilation in there.

The only way I can think of to vent the boot is leave the seats unclipped as if going to fold them down, then leave a good gap. I don't believe there's any other way to be honest

Thanks Jason and WW_VRS

Looks spot on for me. Recently got rid of my false floor and going to go down the back of the seat route so I could have my spare wheel again. Didn't bother me in my last car about not having a spare wheel but with the fabia I seem to be unlucky and get a nice screw throught one of the tyres every other month.

Just tape up all the wires on show with black tape. Just so it looks a little nicer.

Either that or I make some holes on to the board where my 6x9s are sitting.

Nice idea, but I really don't like tape. Its the sticky gooeyness if you ever have to take it off, add to that the little bit of heat and its pretty nasty. On my install I only really used tape for insulating things behind the dash - and then nearly a whole pack of 100mm cable ties everywhere!

I am on the lookout for some black spiral wrap though to hide the white speaker cables I have. What is that elasticky material that covers a lot of the OEM wiring - behind the dash on the ISO plug cables and around the bottom of the back seats for example? That stuff looks nice

Hey Hussein...

Judging by your name, you're a Parsi Indian aren't you? :)

Either that or I make some holes on to the board where my 6x9s are sitting.

If you are worried about the heat (and in your part of the world that might be more of a problem) then cut a small hole in the parcel shelf and use a small 12v fan to extract the air. You can get ones designed for computer cases with all sorts of lighting for a pound http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=43009

I was actually thinking about that...I think I might do that....thanks man :)

Kinda OT... but no, african-indian. The name is more of a religion thing, and is not really associated with any nationality.

Oh yes it is. Parsis are ancient Iranians who were driven from Iran down to India when there was a religious revolution...can't remember the year... and have since settled there. Indians of the Parsi religion look different to the 'regular'...more Iranian....more attractive ;) I say this because I had a girlfriend (who I loved very much) who was a Parsi Indian, and she was gorgeous....her last name was Unvalla so I'm basing my assumption on this. Correct me if I'm wrong please :D

Hussein was an Islamic prophet, and so a traditional Islamic name. As simple as that really.

I understand that, I din't miss that, but by your LAST name, I would think you've had Parsi ancestors.....................................if you did it would be so ironic! :D
