Should i get a "find my ipone" app?

Featured Replies

Afternoon all :)

Was just thinking about one of these last night and read a few reviews but they all seem to say the same thing....great  until you loose your phone and someone finds its and just turns your phone off!!

Thoughts from the great techie gods of Briskoda ?

Kit :)

they have to turn it back on at some point though, don't they :)

I think Kit meant turning off the find my iphone app?!

I have a pin-lock on my iphone, so would have to crack that to turn off the app. Plus, I have already lost an iphone and reckon I would have found it had I known about the find my iphone app :(

with ios 7, you need the itunes account password as well to turn app off.

Thanks for the replies...meant just turning the fone off...folk seem to reckon that if the bad peeps turn the phone off then when they flog it to someone who wants it all they have to do is re chip it or whatever they do and put a new sim card in and they are away!!!! From what ive read it works great when the phone is still on but absolutley useless if its simply turned off!!

k:)

Get it

It's even useful if you lose your phone down the back of the sofa, just log onto the website and make it ring so you can find it :)

Not everybody who steals a phone, or just finds one and decides to keep it is a computer genius, i have heard of people trying to guess the pass code, and after a few attempts, getting there pictures taken and emailed to the owner lol

Sadly, there are ways around everything - Apple have made this easier than most for stolen/lost phones.

We found this out at work when getting phone come back to us in the IT department after people had left and not left their lock codes with the phone. Takes about 10 mins to get back into the phone as long as you don't mind losing the data (which if your phone goes walkies they won't).

IOS7 prevents the phones activation if wiped, even in DFU without the account credentials "find my iphone" was setup with

Doesn't matter even with the phone in silent mode or the volume turned right down when you send an alert to make the phone beep via "find my iphone" it beeps at full volume

I used 'Prey' on my android phones. A great free app and you can add a couple of pooters too. I think Apple stop it fulfilling it's full potential, but it might be worth a look?

Thanks folks :) well seeing as its a free app i suppose its better than nothing...i might be tempting fate by getting the app though as ive never lost a phone yet!!

Kit :)

It's a decent app for helping locate your lost phone. But useless if it's stolen.

My mrs lost her iPhone 5 at Drayton manor, I tracked it on my phone but the person who had taken it must have switched it straight off.

Factory reset using iTunes and they have a new phone passcode or no passcode.

like i said before its not that case with ios7 now, even if the phone is wiped in DFU mode it requires the apple account to reactivate the handset or it'll keep reporting in on the same find my iphone details

To answer the original question, I strongly recommend activating Find iPhone. I use that app to find my iPhone and iPad (and my wife's too!) when they have gone missing in the house. I also use the app to check my wife's location and progress when she is driving home from work.
