belt tensioner question octavia mk1 2004

Featured Replies

I own a 2004 1.9tdi and noticed that when the engine is running there is a slight rattle, if i grab hold of the top of the belt tensioner is goes away, is this part easy to change and would i be better off buying the whole part or just the tensioner strut, anyone know the best place to buy one from too.

i dont mind doing a bit of work myself on the car so im guessing this part is just a simple swap over

cheers

Better chance of receiving the advice you want in the Octavia section.  ;)

sorry its a 110bhp non pd model...

ive also noticed that when excelerating away and changing up to second or third gear sooner than later i get alot of chatter or so it sounds from the turbo... never had a vnt car before so i guess this could be the start of problems  :)

I would put money on the clutch in the alternator pulley being knackered, which has in turn killed the tensioner. Tensioner is about 50 quid (because of the damper) the pulley is about 20 but you need a special tool to get the pulley off and the alternator has to come out. Oh and change the aux belt while your at it.

Your chatter could be tensioner rather than the turbo. Try holding the revs at about 2.5k and quickly take your foot off the accelerator, does it make the chatter noise then? - do this stationary not in gear.

well i went out this morning started the car as normal, and decided to give it a good hard rev while stationary.. no smoke but the car made a horrible chatter noise and died on me..i thought omg what have a done.. tried to start again but the engine just whizzed over, so turned the ignition off and tried again and the car started as normal... i do hope i have bought a bad motor here... took the car for a drive up the road and it was all normal again... is this time to think of using the Mr Muscle treatment  !!!

I would look to get the car scanned with VCDS for any faults.

ok cheers, will do. i know the guy i bought it from did the cam belt himself so it might not have been timed properly either..  now just need to find someone local to me with a vcds who fancies a drink for there time..

I'm a bit too far away, have a look at the list/map in the VCDS forum.

will do just spoke to a dealer and they want £87.00 just to plug it in..!!!

Please follow the advice of trundlenut, I had the exact same thing and it was the alternator pulley clutch. Changed alternator, tensioner and belt. Problem solved.

ok guys will do this first then worry..lol.... i guess i can get all the stuff from a motor factors yes

. is this time to think of using the Mr Muscle treatment  !!!

You need to see if the actuator arm on the turbo moves freely (when cold) before jumping to any conclusions.

I agree to the above re: pulley and aux belt tensioner, as mine failed at St Marks roundabout in Salisbury one morning....
