Speed sign display.

Featured Replies

What do you need for the speed sign display function.

I've ordered the Columbus, what others actually needed

I think you need the Front Assist and its cameras.  I have Columbus but my build was too early for Front Assist inclusion - I don't have Traffic Sign Recognition.

Get a cheap second-hand £30 TomTom sat-nav with updates....

Does front assist actually add any cameras? I thought it just added the radar on the front.

I did read somewhere that traffic sign recognition was country dependent though. I also have Columbus on order and assumed it'd use the lane assist camera.

Front assist will need to add cameras for reading of the signs, but it all seems pretty pointless to me. As I need to look out of the window to see where I am going, I may as well look at the road signs myself as well. It is probably much safer glancing at the signs as I approach them rather than staring at the satnav/maxidot anyway.

Not a fan of gadgets for the sake of gadgets.

@Orville - I agree - I could have delayed getting my car to get these features (Front Assist, Traffic Signs), but I thought that I had been happily driving without them for 32 years, so could probably cope.

I agree it's just a gimmic, but just interested on of I will have it,

Ordered an elegance so it will have front assist, but not specced the adaptive cruise

My Elegance has front assist and light assist but not lane assist or sign recognition.

There are two cameras. One attached to the glass facing upwards (light/rain sensor) and the other is forward facing mounted behind the rear view mirror in a pod.

can't people read road signs anymore?

I could find the function quite useful. For example if you are driving on a road or in a city which is new for you with perhaps hour focus on reading road signs or watching out for traffic. If then a police car turns up behind you it would be comforting to have a quick look at the maxidot to see if you are driving faster than allowed. I mean instead of standing on the brake for no use in case you are not sure if you are speeding or not.

Yes thank you.

Anyone read today about the iPhone Maps error which directs people accross an active airport runway? Imagine if front assist misreads a sign and you blindly do 60 in a 30 zone. Who's fault would it be, the idiot who built the technology or the idiot who follows it blindly? If you cannot see 2ft red circular signs with black on white text whilst driving, you probably shouldn't be driving in the first place. This seems like a recipe to create more accidents rather than prevent them. It's the most stupid idea sice 3 wheel vans, the inherent flaw being obvious to anyone who thinks about it.

Same here... what's wrong with just looking through the windscreen for road signs? I love gadgets, but I just don't see the benefit of this option.
