Adding power

Featured Replies

I am thinking about upping the power on my Octavia 2.0 PD by chipping or remap. Any ideas which would be best and easiest ?

What could I get out of my current 140 bhp lump?

A Stage 1remap from the likes of shark or superchips will give you around 170 bhp. If you contact Ben at Shark he should be able to provide you with a graph showing a typical example of what to expect. For both of the above you should be able to get the map on their hand held unit which you plug into the diagnostic port and replace your standard map and you can put it back to stock as and when you want. You will probably be able to buy the unit with the new map on by post and upload it yourself. Both websites have a vid showing how easy it is to do.

I'm not saying that the above places are not good or anything like that as I've never used them myself but honestly doing a remap by flashing your ecu with some generic maps without even logging the car before and after that it's like asking for trouble it may and most likely will work but I would never do that to my car...

A stage 1 map is designed to increase power on a standard car. By default the cars it will be uploaded to will be all the same specification.

The likes of the big tuners (Revo. APR etc), develop their maps on several cars over many tens of thousands of miles.

Custom maps are only really needed when your car has some degree of modification already.

well I'm not a guru on remaps or anything but still I don't believe that you can safely apply a modified map to a car without at least checking how it is responding to the modifications after the ecu has been flashed. In 99% of cases everything will be just fine but every car is different the turbo and injectors condition may vary or be far away from stock even if it's all done remotely it should be a good practice that you send the logs afterwards so they can check them and adjust the map accordingly especially when they are charging £350 for generic map which you can most likely find somewhere on the Internet (or copy from a forum member) for free and apply using £25 cable from ebay...

.

It's like my local GP practice these days they have just diagnose my wife over the phone not even seeing here and tomorrow I'm going to a pharmacy to pick up some antibiotics they have prescribed  for her. Well, most likely she will live but hey don't worry if it doesn't work just give us a call...

But yes maybe you are right most people will be happy with what they will get as they have no idea how exactly it suppose to be done or could be done differently.

I used a Bluefin on my last car....Mondeo ST TDCI....and also made a few other mods that had been 'tried and tested' if you like by a good number fo others on the ST Drivers forum. Whilst I take the quoted performance improvements (bhp sells cars and increses in bhp sell performance enhancing gadgets) with a lareg pinch of salt, I found that the bluefin on it's own made the car far more pleasureable to drive, more responsive....and bizarrely, gave me an extra 1 mpg. The other side effect I noticed though, was a puff a smoke on almost every gear change.....

That coupled with the de-cat, and when the exhaust eventually packed, in a JP Stainless Exhuast. So, although I went for it.....it had been reasonably well tried and tested..   In the end the car was more repsonsive across the range, marginally better fuel economy and sounded way better.....but I know this won;t work for every car.....or the results will be different in every car. Now that I've got the vRS.......I'm beginning to want to 'tinker' with it.....but, even with the stock power outputs.....I'm not feeling any 'need' to.........yet!

I have an Octavia Sport mk2 2.0 tdi PD 140 with a remap by Angel Tuning, they claimed gains of 45bhp so its around 185bhp now with a K&N panel fitler fitted. My Mrs has a Seat Altea XL 2.0 tdi CR 170bhp and mine has more grunt and less turbo lag, it pulls far better so I'd say the power gains they claim are about right.

They came to the house downloaded my old map then uploaded the new one, took me out for a drive with the laptop plugged in and tuned it on the go to my specifications, £225 all in!
